Spartans Fall to Top-Ranked Salisbury
YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey squad fell to #1 Salisbury University Saturday 4-2 in York on Saturday. With the loss, the Spartans fall back to .500 at 5-5 on the season, including 2-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play, while the top-ranked Sea Gulls up their season mark to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
The visitors pushed the pace early scoring twice within the contest's first five minutes. Salisbury's Erica Henderson put her squad up 1-0 just 1:14 into the match as she finished off a Tara McGovern assist. Following a Salisbury penalty corner, a pair of attackers put together a give-and-go combination inside the arc. McGovern then sent the ball toward the left post allowing Henderson to notch the tip-in goal.
Henderson struck again just 3:02 later, scoring her fifth of the season. Caitlin Walker provided a hard service from the right side of the field, across the face of the Spartan goal to Henderson on the left. The Salisbury forward collected the pass before slotting home the goal into the left side of the cage.
After that however, the offensive output quieted. During a vast majority of the middle of the first stanza, neither side was able to generate much in the attack as much of the contest was played in the middle third of the field.
With time winding down in the first frame, York looked to go into the halftime break only down a manageable two scores. However, Salisbury pushed during the final minutes and notched their third goal on an Emily Voshell tally with only 1:24 remaining in the half.
Salisbury increased their advantage to 4-0 early in the second half. Just 43 seconds into the latter 35 minutes, Courtney Webster scored her third goal of the season courtesy of a Henderson assist.
York would eventually spoil Salisbury's efforts at the shutout as sophomore forward Sandee Reich tallied her sixth goal of the season in the game's 64th minute of play. Reich collected a Colleen O'Rourke pass, took a dribble, and then fired home York's first notch of the contest.
In the 68th minute, O'Rourke would cut the Sea Gull advantage to 4-2. A crossing strike caromed off of Salisbury goalkeeper Anna Cooke and out to O'Rourke who promptly hammered home her first goal of the 2010 season.
York's efforts would come up short however, as the final horn sounded with Salisbury capturing the 4-2 CAC win.
For the game, the Sea Gulls owned a 13-6 lead in shots and a 10-3 lead in penalty corners.
Cooke picks up the win in the Salisbury cage after making three saves. Spartan starter Maggie Schlauch suffers the defeat despite making four saves during her 38:51 of work. Lydia Pirie played 31:09 for the York side as she made a pair of stops.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, October 5, when they welcome Dickinson College to Kinsley Field. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:30 pm start.
