Spartans Fall in Regular Season Finale

LANCASTER, PA – The York College field hockey squad fell 4-1 to host Franklin & Marshall under the lights Wednesday evening in the Spartans’ regular season finale. The Green and White close out their 2009 schedule with a 13-7 record while the Diplomats improve to 9-7 on the year. The loss snaps York’s five-game winning streak, which dates back to their 1-0 win over Elizabethtown on October 13.

Franklin & Marshall opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on Eileen O’Reilly’s fifth goal of the season. Chelsey Talhelm, who would prove to be a huge thorn in the Spartans’ side, provided the assist with a pass to O’Reilly from the left flank allowing the junior to blast home the Diplomats’ opening salvo.

That 1-0 score would hold throughout the rest of the frame and halftime break – but not long after.

A mere 27 seconds into the second stanza, Talhelm notched her second helper of the night, this time on a pass to Becky Willert. During a scrum around York’s cage, Talhelm was able to get the ball to Willert who tallied her third of 2009.

Up 2-0, the hosts would add another late in the 43rd minute as Talhelm proved the assist beneficiary on this occasion. Stolle Singleton crossed in a service from the flank that Talhelm was able to knock home, putting her squad up by a significant, but not insurmountable, 3-0 margin.

The Spartans would attempt to mount a comeback bid as Katie Dawkins (Easton, Md./Easton) converted her 16th tally of the year in the 49th minute. Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) found Dawkins from the top of the circle allowing Dawkins to lift her attempt just beside the goalkeeper’s helmet and into the cage to cut the Diplomat lead to 3-1.

Dawkins’ score proved to only spoil the shutout bid however, as Franklin & Marshall tacked on a third with 13:18 remaining in the game. Willert knocked in her second of the match as O’Reilly provided the final assist and the 4-1 result.

For the game, the Diplomats held a 16-6 lead in shots including a 10-3 advantage in the second half. The hosts also led 11-6 in penalty corners.

Sarah Dileo picks up the victory in the cage for Franklin & Marshall as she made four saves throughout her 70 minutes of work. Senior netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) suffered the loss as she also made four stops.

With the conclusion of the regular season, the Spartans now embark on the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Due to a logjam near the top of the league standings, the Green and White now await the results of Thursday’s Wesley vs. Stevenson match in Owings Mills, Md. A Stevenson victory gives the Spartans a third-place finish in the league while a Wesley win will force a three-way tie and a coin toss will determine seeds two through four.
