Spartans Remain Hot, Down Bobcats on the Road
FROSTBURG, MD – The York College field hockey squad notched a 3-1 non-conference victory at Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans have won three straight and improve to 5-4 overall while the Bobcats fall to 6-4. The match was an out-of-league contest this year, but Frostburg State will join the Spartans in the Capital Athletic Conference as a first-year member in the fall of 2010.
Junior Katie Dawkins (Easton, Md./Easton) got the scoring started off a penalty stroke goal just 12:45 into the game. The tally was Dawkins’ team-leading eighth goal of the year. It was her first penalty stroke goal of the campaign.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 2-0 just before the half as senior Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) converted an unassisted goal for the Green and White just 1:01 prior to the half.
The Spartans outshot their hosts 14-3 in the opening half while York also held an 8-3 margin in penalty corners.
The Bobcats cut the Spartan lead in half late in the second half as Breanne Russell notched an unassisted goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Spartans answered by taking the play right back at Frostburg. York got three shots and two penalty corners over the next eight minutes before Spangler put the game on ice with an insurance goal with just seven seconds remaining in regulation. The goal was her second of the game and third of the season.
York finished the game with a 21-7 edge in total shots and a 14-3 margin in shots on goal. The Green and White also had a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners for the match.
Senior Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) recorded the win as she allowed a goal with two saves in her stint in goal. Frostburg’s Maggie Edwards was busy with 11 saves in her 70 minutes of work.
The Spartans return to action when they travel
to McDaniel for another non-conference contest. Game time is slated
for 4:30 pm.
