CARLISLE, PA – The York College field hockey squad posted their seventh road win of the year with a 3-2 victory over Dickinson College on Tuesday afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans improve to 8-5 overall while the host Red Devils fall to 3-7 for 2009. After going 0-8 on the road last year, the Spartans are a stellar 7-1 away from home this season.
The Red Devils controlled the early 20 minutes of play as they outshot the Spartans 11-1. Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) was again outstanding as she turned the Red Devils away eight times in the opening 20 minutes, keeping the game scoreless.
York got on the board with their second shot as junior Katie Dawkins (Easton, Md./Easton) notched her team-leading 12th goal of the year off a pass from senior Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County). The goal came in the 22nd minute of the game.
The Red Devils weren’t deterred as they managed to fire off two more shots in the next two minutes with Rekitzke making two more stops. Dickinson finally got one past Rekitzke as Kaity Moore scored in the game’s 25th minute on the Red Devils’ 14th shot of the half.
York responded just 48 seconds later as Spangler fed Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) off a corner. Roush drilled the ball past Red Devil goalkeeper Amanda West for the 2-1 Spartan lead. The tally was Roush’s sixth of the year.
Freshman Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) capped the first half scoring with her third goal of the year as she struck for a tally with just 2:32 remaining in the opening half.
The Spartans held to 3-1 lead despite being out-shot 16-9 in the stanza. A large reason was Rekitzke’s play as the senior continues to have a wildly successful final year in the green and white. The Spartan netminder recorded 11 first half stops.
The Red Devils trimmed the Spartan lead to one less than ten minutes into the second half but the Green and White defense stiffened over the final 25 minutes, keeping the hosts out of the cage.
Rekitzke notched a season-high 16 saves in her 70 minutes of work. The reigning Spartan Athlete of the Week, has made 28 saves in her last two games after her 12 saves in the loss to #2 Salisbury University on Saturday.
Amanda West made five stops in cage for the Red Devils.
Dickinson finished the game holding a 23-11 margin in shots including an 18-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Red Devils also held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when
they travel to Wilson College to face the Phoenix in a
non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm.
