Spartan Win Streak Reaches Five

READING, PA  - The York College field hockey squad remained red hot as the Spartans posted their fifth straight win with a 5-2 victory at Albright College on Thursday afternoon in Reading, PA. The Green and White improves to 7-4 with the victory while the Lions fall to 4-7 for the campaign.

The Lions seized the early control of the match as the hosts had three shots and three corners in the opening four minutes of play. The Spartans started turning the tide of play in their favor starting with a penalty corner in the sixth minute of play. York recorded three corners and three shots over the next eight minutes with the third shot being a Katie Dawkins (Easton, Md./Easton) goal. Sophomore Brittany Simmons (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) made a quick pass to Dawkins and the junior forward put the ball home for her team-leading tenth goal of the year. The goal came with just over 20 minutes remaining in the opening half.

York wasted little time in building on the lead as Becky Reeves (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford) found senior Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) off a penalty corner as Spangler redirected the ball for the 2-0 Spartan lead. Spangler’s goal came with 16:23 remaining in the first half. The Spartans continued their first-half offensive onslaught with a third goal with 14:34 remaining in the opening stanza. Sophomore Colleen O’Rourke (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley) found the back of the cage on a Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic) assist off a corner. The tally was the first career goal for the Spartan defender. Albright made a furious push into the Spartans’ defensive end over the next 12 minutes of the half but Spartan netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) was outstanding as she registered four saves over the final eight minutes of the half.

York struck again just 35 seconds after the half as Spangler tallied her second goal of the day as Dawkins bounced a pass through the box and Spangler one-timed the ball for her sixth goal of the year.

The Spartans made it 5-0 just 1:18 later as freshman Danielle Gaitings (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored off a pass from Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township). The goal was Gaitings’ first career tally.

The Lions avoided the shutout with a Kelly Zepp goal with less than 19 minutes left in the game. The hosts tacked on a second goal with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Lions held a 12-8 advantage in shots including an 8-5 margin in shots on goal. York registered 11 penalty corners to five for Albright.

Rekitzke was stellar in goal for the Green and White as she made six stops in her 47:02 of action.

Kaitlyn Johnstone absorbed the loss for the Lions as she allowed all five Spartan goals without making a save in 39:31 of play. Champale Thomas Brown did not make a save in her 30:29 of action in cage.

The Spartans’ five-match win streak will be put to a stern test on Saturday as the Green and White host the second ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls at Kinsley Field in York. Game time for the Capital Athletic Conference contest is set for 1:00 pm.
