Spartans Post Consecutive 5-0 Wins
YORK, PA – Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored and tallied two assists Thursday evening as she led the York College field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over visiting Goucher College. The Spartans, who have won their past two games by 5-0 margins, move to 3-1 on the young campaign, while the Gophers drop to 1-3.
The opening minutes of the contest belonged entirely to the green and white. York amassed four unanswered penalty corners and two shots before senior April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) knocked home her second tally of 2008 just 3:32 into the contest. Roush took the ball to the left corner of the cage before slotting a pinpoint cross to an awaiting McFarland at the right side. McFarland’s score put York up 1-0 and would eventually prove to be the game-winning tally.
At the 31:03 mark, Roush would get on in the scoring column as she registered her second goal of the season off of a Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic) penalty corner. Lawrence played the free ball to Roush who was just inside the top of the circle. The Spartan newcomer then ripped her strike into the back of the Gopher cage to give the green and white a 2-0 advantage.
Just over three minutes later, Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) was the beneficiary of another Roush assist and gave York a 3-0 margin. After a penalty corner, the ball came loose in front of the cage. Roush was able to knock a pass over to Spangler who promptly recorded the third score of the contest and take the Spartans into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Ten minutes into the second frame, Spangler got the Spartans on the board for a 4-0 lead. A Spartan shot forced Gopher goalkeeper Micki Manheimer to make a save but the ensuing rebound came to Spangler. The junior then put away the rebound for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Spartans would post their fifth and final score of the
contest with the clock reading all zeros. Following a Gopher
miscue, York was awarded with a penalty corner, which was struck by
sophomore Kelly Kreamer (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon).
After inserting the ball, Kreamer came back into the play and got
settled at the right side of the cage. The Spartans were able to
push the ball almost just along the goal line and back over to
Kreamer who poked in theSpartans fifth goal of the game.
Kreamer’s tally was the first of her collegiate career.
For the game, the Spartans recorded 18 shots to Goucher’s five while the green and white also held a 13-10 advantage in penalty corners.
Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) picks up her third win of the season in the Spartan net as she made a trio of saves. Manheimer takes the loss for the Gophers as she made three saves over her 51 minutes of work. Chloe Dircks finished out the contest’s final 19 minutes, making a pair of saves.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, September 13 when they travel to the University of Mary Washington. The Capital Athletic Conference tilt is slated for 1:00 pm.
