ELIZABETHTOWN, PA-It took almost a month but
the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays finally knocked off the York
College Spartan field hockey squad 4-1 on Thursday afternoon in
Elizabethtown, PA. The two teams began the game on Saturday, Sept.
6 but tropical storm Hanna prevented them from finishing the
contest. The Spartans traveled to Elizabethtown a second time to
conclude the final 14:52 of the game.
In the original portion of the game, the Blue Jays wasted little time in getting on the board in the first as Katy Boone scored on an Andrea Miles assist just 2:24 into the game. The hosts increased their lead to 2-0 just under 12 minutes later as Liz DeMatteis scored the first of her two goals in the game. DeMatteis made the score 3-0 with 8:01 remaining in the first half.
After the intermission, the Blue Jays pushed the lead to 4-0 when Megan Angstadt took a DeMatteis pass and put it home for the goal 4:50 into the second stanza.
When the two teams resumed the game on Thursday, the Spartans got on the board in the 57th minute of play and just 1:04 into the restart of the game as Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) scored off a pass from Casey Knauss (St. Michael’s, Md./Easton) on a penalty corner.
The Spartans managed two shots in the final minutes of action but it was not enough to overcome the Blue Jays’ early advantage.
The Blue Jays finished the game with a 20-3 edge in shots while the hosts also had a 14-2 bulge in penalty corners.
Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) was again busy in goal as she recorded 10 saves in 70 minutes of action. Blue Jay goalie Liz Hannegan faced just three shots and made one save.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host St. Mary’s College in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time at Kinsley Field is set for 1:00 pm.
