Spartans Set to Kick off 2008 on Friday
YORK, PA-The York College Spartans open the 2008 fall athletic campaign on Friday afternoon with the field hockey squad hosting Albright College at 4:30 pm. That contest kicks off a nine-month odyssey that will feature 20 Spartan athletic teams competing in the 2008-09 academic year.
The field hockey match opens a busy weekend that will see four Spartan programs open their seasons. The men’s soccer team travels to Christopher Newport to participate in the VCAM/CNU Classic. York faces #14 Virginia Wesleyan in a battle of two top 25 teams as the Spartans open the season fifth in the country. That contest kicks off at 5:00 pm on Friday.
Saturday features the women’s soccer squad, who open the season ranked 16th in the nation, traveling to Susquehanna University to face the Crusaders in the SU Tournament. Game time is set for 12:00 pm in Selinsgrove. The volleyball team begins their 2008 campaign by hosting Elizabethtown, Swarthmore, and McDaniel in a quad meet. The Spartans face McDaniel at 12:00 pm with the Blue Jays and Garnet playing at the same time. The two 12:00 pm winners will play at 2:00 pm, as will the two losers in the day’s opening matches. The men’s soccer team concludes its stay at Christopher Newport on Saturday night as they face the host Captains at 7:30 pm.
Sunday closes out the opening weekend as the Spartan women’s soccer squad faces Lycoming at 12:00 pm in the second round of the SU Tournament at Susquehanna.
