Big Second Half Lifts Eagles Past Spartans

YORK, PA-The University of Mary Washington Eagles spoiled the York College field hockey squad’s 2007 home debut as the Eagles tallied three second-half goals to down the Spartans 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads. The Eagles improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the league with the win while the green and white falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Spartans have now lost three straight after a season-opening win at Albright. York has also allowed nine second half goals in their last two games.

The first stanza featured the Eagle offense spending a majority of the half in the Spartan defensive zone. The Spartans did manage to get some offensive push late in the half but York was unable to get any chances near the Eagle cage as UMW held an 8-0 edge in total shots and a 5-0 bulge in shots on goal.

The Eagles came out of the break and broke the tie just over 11 minutes into the second half as Kalyn Perkins tallied an unassisted goal for UMW. The goal was Perkins’ second of the year.

Mary Washington pushed the lead to 2-0 exactly five minutes later as Maureen McGee converted a penalty stroke with 18:31 left in regulation. The Eagles’ Sarah Healy iced the victory with a goal off a Cassandra Stewart pass with 13:40 remaining in the game.

York did not threaten the lead as they finished the game with just three shots with just one coming on target.

UMW’s Erin Arnwine earned the win in goal as she was forced to come up with just one stop in her 70 minutes of action. Spartan netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) played well as she made nine saves but she was also charged with the three Eagle goals.

The Eagles finished the game holding a significant 17-3 advantage in total shots while they also had 11 penalty corners to just one for YCP.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday afternoon as they face nationally ranked Lynchburg in a non-conference tilt. The contest is set to begin at 1:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
