Green Terror Edge Spartans in Non-Conference Contest
WESTMINSTER, MD-The York College field hockey squad dropped a
tough 2-1 decision at McDaniel College on Tuesday afternoon in
non-conference action. The Green Terror, playing in their season
opener, improve to 1-0 while the Spartans, who are on a streak of
five games in eight days, fall to 1-1.
The Green Terror had the first good scoring
chance of the game as Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) stoned McDaniel’s
Brooke Dixon on a penalty stroke just 2:17 into the game. The Green
Terror did manage to beat Rekitzke just over 15 minutes later as
Dixon took a shot that Rekitzke saved but the carom when directly
to Michelle Fluty who deposited the ball in the cage for the
icebreaker.
The Green Terror would take that 1-0 margin to
the break as they dominated the first half statistics, outshooting
the green and white 7-1 and holding a 3-1 edge in penalty
corners.
The Spartan defense kept York in the game until
the offense tied the game courtesy of senior Jami
Hassler’s (Derwood, Md./Magruder) second goal of the
year, an unassisted tally with 8:43 remaining in regulation. It was
a good day for the Spartan senior forward as earlier in the
afternoon, Hassler was named the Capital Athletic Conference
Player of the Week.
The Green Terror wasted little time in
recapturing the lead as Fluty struck again, scoring off an Amanda
Pickard pass just 2:31 after Hassler’s goal.
The Spartans had a great chance to tie the game
with 32 seconds remaining in regulation. York’s Casey
Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic) and
April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) had a
break away but Lawrence’s initial shot was saved by Green
Terror keeper Erika Wawzyanick. McFarland couldn’t collect
the rebound before it trickled harmlessly out of bounds as the
clock wound down. The Spartans wouldn’t get another chance to
tie the game as they suffered their first loss of the year.
Wawzyanick earned the win in goal as she
allowed the one goal while she recorded four saves for the game.
Rekitzke was kept busy as the Spartan goalie made eight saves in
her 70 minutes of work.
The Green Terror outshot the Spartans 12-5
while they also held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.
York returns to action on Thursday when they
face Gettysburg College in Gettysburg. The contest is slated to
begin at 4:30 pm.
