YORK, PA-The struggles of the York College field hockey team continued on Sunday as the Spartans suffered their fourth straight loss, falling to #19 Lynchburg College 4-0 in a non-conference tilt on a steamy afternoon in York. The Spartans are now 1-4 for the 2007 campaign while the Hornets improve to 4-1 overall.
Lynchburg opened the scoring with a Samantha Howard goal 6:03 into the game. Allie Weir assisted on the goal which was Howard’s fourth of the year. The Hornets would be unable to find the back of the cage the remainder of the half despite holding a huge 17-2 advantage in first half shots.
The second half proved to be all about Weir as the sophomore standout scored three goals in a span of 3:30 early in the second half. Weir, who now has 13 goals and six assists for a mind-blowing 32 points in just five games, began her personal scoring spree with a goal with 18:45 remaining in the game. She then struck for a second goal 50 seconds later off a pass from Howard. She then closed out the day’s scoring with an unassisted goal with 15:15 left in the match.
The Hornets dominated the statistics as they outshot the hosts 27-8 while both teams had six penalty corners.
Sarah Cates earned the shutout for the Hornets as she notched five saves for the game. The whitewashing is her second shutout of the year. Spartan sophomore Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) continues to play well as she recorded 13 saves.
The Spartan offense has now gone 207:21 without a goal as the last goal came 2:39 into the game at Gettysburg.
York looks to snap their losing streak on Wednesday as they travel to Hood for a CAC contest against the Blazers. Game time is slated for 4:30.
