FREDERICK, MD-The York College field hockey team snapped their four game losing streak with a solid 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Hood College on Wednesday afternoon in Frederick, MD. The Spartans improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while the Blazers, playing in their inaugural conference contest, fall to 1-3 overall.
The Spartans opened the scoring midway through the first half as sophomore Heather Re (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) recorded an unassisted goal on a shot from 10 yards out 17:43 into the game. The Spartans would be unable to add to the lead the remainder of the half despite holding an 8-0 edge in first half shots.
The green and white pushed the lead to 2-0 4:19 into the second half as junior captain April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) found the back of the cage for her team-leading third goal of the game.
The Spartans continued to hold the edge in momentum until Hood’s Crystal Parker scored on the Blazers’ lone shot of the game. Parker’s goal came off an assist from Lauren Perzan with 13:45 remaining in regulation.
The green and white held the Blazers off to earn their first win since the season-opening victory at Albright.
York finished the game with significant advantages in total shots (15-1) and penalty corners (5-1).
Sophomore Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del. /Seaford Senior) went the distance and picked up the win while Ashley Saylor made four saves and absorbed the loss for the Blazers.
York returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Dickinson College. Game time in Carlisle is set for 1:00 pm.
