Griffins Edge Spartans in Non-Conference Tilt

York, PA - The York College field hockey team fell to the
visting Gwynedd-Mercy College 2-1 in non-conference action
Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Spartans are now 4-10
(2-4 CAC), while Gwynedd-Mercy improves to 8-5.
From the opening whistle it seemed as if York
would have the better of the play for the game. The green and
white controlled much of the tempo throughout the first stanza, but
were simply unable to break through for the lead.
After a scoreless first half, Gwynedd-Mercy
took the lead in the 44th minute of play on a goal from Amanda
Reppert. Ashley Blackwell fed the sophomore forward in front
of the Spartan net for the finish. Reppert’s 12th goal
of the campaign gave her squad the 1-0 advantage.
The green and white tied the score at one in
the 55th minute. April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern
York) tallied her team-leading seventh goal after a pass
from Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./Delone
Catholic) found the forward’s stick. McFarland
neatly beat Griffins’ goalkeeper Aubrey McDevitt to even the
score.
Gwynedd-Mercy’s game-winning score came
in the 62nd minute of action. Reppert struck a hard shot to the
back post where the awaiting Aubrey Wolf hammered home the tally.
York pushed hard for the equalizer throughout
the next eight minutes but were turned away each time by the
Griffin defense.
Claire Retizke (Seaford, Del./Seaford
Senior) takes the loss in net for the green and
white. The sophomore goalkeeper recorded two saves during her
70 minutes of work.
McDevitt notched six saves on the evening to
keep the Spartans at bay. McDevitt’s defense also
chipped in the saves category as defender Kate Loftus recorded a
stop of her own.
York returns to action this Saturday as they
host Messiah College in a 1:00 pm non-conference tilt. The
Falcons are currently ranked eighth in the country in the STX/NFHCA
Division III National Coaches Poll.
