TOWSON, MD-The York College field hockey team snapped their three game losing streak with a solid 2-1 non-conference win at former Capital Athletic Conference member Goucher on Tuesday afternoon in Towson, MD. The Spartans improve to 5-11 overall while the Gophers fall to 2-8 for the season.
The Spartans struck first as junior captain Casey Knauss (St. Michaels, Md./Easton) fed sophomore Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) with a nice pass that Spangler put in the back of the cage for the 1-0 Spartan lead. The goal was Spangler’s second goal of the year and came with 21:05 remaining in the first half.
The Gophers tied the game with 7:51 left in the half as Kate Kramer scored on a penalty corner. Sara Spadanuta and Allison Metzger assisted on the goal.
The green and white recorded the game-winning goal when Spangler found junior captain April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) for the Spartan goal. The tally was McFarland’s team-high ninth goal of the year and it came with 26:14 remaining in regulation.
The Spartans held on for the victory as they outshot Goucher 9-4 in the second half.
Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del. /Seaford Senior) earned the win in goal as she notched four saves. Aline Haddad suffered the loss despite making eight saves for the Gophers.
York finished the game holding a 15-8 bulge in total shots while the green and white also had a 16-11 edge in penalty corners.
The Spartans close out their home schedule on Thursday afternoon as York hosts Lebanon Valley in a non-conference contest. The match at Kinsley Field is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
