CARLISLE, PA-The York College field hockey team tied their game against Dickinson College with eight second in regulation and then scored the game-winner in double overtime as the Spartans outlasted the Red Devils 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans improve to 3-4 overall as they have won two straight, while the Red Devils fall to 3-3 for 2007.
Dickinson opened the scoring with 12:37 remaining in the first half as Katelynn Bias took a long outlet from Megan Kelly and put the ball home for the 1-0 lead. It remained a one-goal margin thanks to Spartan netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del. /Seaford Senior) as she notched three first half saves. The Red Devils dominated the first-half statistics, outshooting York 11-1 and holding a 5-0 edge in penalty corners.
The Red Devils had a chance to make it a 2-0 lead with 7:27 remaining in regulation but Rekitzke stoned the Red Devils on a penalty stroke.
York tied the game on a penalty corner with eight seconds left as Jami Hassler (Derwood, Md./Magruder) ripped a strong shot off a pass from Heather Re (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown). The shot caromed into the upper right 90 for the game-tying tally.
The Spartans then won the game 58 seconds into the second overtime as Hassler took a pass from freshman Lisa King (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and fired a shot at the Devil goal. Junior April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern York) was on the post and redirected the shot for the game-winner.
Rekitzke earned the win as she made eight saves in 85:58 of work. Dickinson goalie Amanda West was equally as good as she notched six saves for the Red Devils.
Dickinson finished the game with a 19-11 edge in total shots and an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Susquehanna. Game time is set for 4:30 pm.
