Spartans Edge Lions in Field Hockey Season-Opener

READING, PA-The York College field hockey team started off their 2007 campaign on the right foot on Sunday, defeating host Albright 3-2. Senior Jami Hassler (Derwood, Md. / Magruder) was instrumental in the Spartan attack registering a goal and two assists in the victory.

Albright struck first as Lindsay Neal scored off a double assist from Jordan Toroniewski and Kelly Zepp 10:53 into the game. The Spartans tied the game 17:19 into the game as junior April McFarland (York, Pa. / Eastern York) scored her first goal of the season. McFarland took a pass from Hassler and buried it in the back of the cage, tying the game at one midway through the first half.

Toroniewski put the Lions on top just over five minutes into the second half as she tallied an unassisted goal at the 40:09 mark of the game.  York would not notch the equalizer until freshman Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa. / Delone Catholic) scored off a Hassler feed with only 3:12 remaining in regulation.

Hassler broke the tie just 40 seconds later, netting the game-winner with 2:32 remaining in regulation. The Spartans would hang on to post the victory.

Shots were even at 20 attempts apiece, with the Spartans gaining a slight edge in penalty corners 9-5.

Spartan sophomoe netminder Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del. / Seaford Senior) went the distance in net for the green and white notching eight saves on the day. Albright goalkeeper Rachel Hager kept her team in the game with 13 stops.

York returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 when they travel to McDaniel for their 4:30 match against the Green Terror.
