Johnson & Wales Blanks Spartans in Season Opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The York College baseball team opened their 2018 campaign with an 11-0 loss to Johnson & Wales on Monday evening in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Wildcats blew the game wide open with a seven run top of the ninth to turn the close game into a blowout.

How It Happened

• The Wildcats reached Spartan starter Joel Kenney for a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Back-to-back doubles from Tim Lombardi and Aidan Hagarty gave the Wildcats their first run. Raimiel Rodriguez then made it 2-0 on an RBI single that scored Hagarty.

• The Wildcats got a run on a passed ball in the third and one more in the fourth as Rodriguez tripled and scored on an error.

• Johnson & Wales exploded for seven runs on six hits and an error in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

The Spartans are now 3-4 in season openers under seventh year head coach Mike Scappa … last year the Spartans shutout the Wildcats 7-0 in the opener … York had not been shutout in a season opener in 15 years as the last time it happened was on February 22, 2003 as Virginia Wesleyan blanked the Spartans 6-0 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina … the Spartans finished the 2003 season with a record of 22-16.
