Spartans Drop Series Opener at NYU

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The New York University Violets banged out 18 hits en route to a 10-3 non-conference win over York College on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, New York. The Violets set a new school record for wins in a season with their 22nd of the year while the Spartans' late season slide continues as they have lost five straight.

How It Happened:

• After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Violets jumped on the Green and White for four runs in the bottom of the third. Ryan McLaughlin started the scoring with an RBI single to right to plate the first run. Colman Hendershot then ripped a two run single to center, pushing the NYU lead to 3-0. Jon Iaione closed out the scoring with a single to left. The Violets left the bases loaded in the inning.

• York got a pair of runs back in the fourth as Christian Bilan singled down the left field line and moved to second on an error by the left fielder. Bryce Stout then tripled to center field, scoring Bilan with York's first run. Stout came around to score when Michael Moore singled to center as York cut their deficit in half.

• NYU pushed the lead to 7-2 with a three run bottom of the fifth. The Spartans committed three errors in the inning as all three runs were unearned.

Zach Hossler singled to center, scoring Collin Crowell with York's third run of the day in the top of the seventh.

• NYU scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh and two more bottom of the eighth to provide for the final 10-3 score.

 

Game Notes:

The meeting between the two teams is the first in school history … NYU established a new wins record with their 22nd victory of the year …. NYU is near the end of it's third Division III varsity season … NYU has won at least 20 games in all three of their varsity seasons … the Spartans have lost five straight and 10 of their last 13 after being 15-12 after the 9-6 win over Penn State Harrisburg on April 12 … the Spartans matched a season-high with four errors … they have committed four errors in five different games this year … the Spartans have committed 12 errors during their five game skid … freshman Bryce Stout collected his first career triple in the loss … junior Seth Brosius extended his team lead in doubles as he tallied his 15th of the year … Brosius is hitting .515 (17-of-33) in his last seven games … junior Zach Hossler is hitting .559 (19-of-34) in his last eight games as he has three doubles, two home runs and 10 runs scored … after starting the season with an ERA of 2.12 in February and 4.73 in March, the Spartans sport an ERA of 7.58 ERA in April and May … York is hitting .296 in their five games during May.
