SALISBURY, MD -  The York College baseball team ended their conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury. The Gulls won game one 14-8 and completed the sweep with a 20-2 win in the nightcap.

How It Happened

• The Spartans jumped on top early as Grant Oberholtzer and Logan Countryman went back-to-back to give York a 2-0 lead.

• Salisbury got one back in the bottom of the second on a Jack Barry home run to right center.

• The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Salisbury plated three runs for the 4-2 lead.

• York got those three runs back in the top of the sixth. Christian Bilan jacked a three-run home run to right center, putting York up 5-4.

• That lead was short-lived as Salisbury exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, turning the close game into a 12-5 lead.

• York scored two in the seventh and one more in the eighth to cut the lead to 12-8 but the Gulls finished off the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth.

• York hit four home runs in the game while Salisbury blasted five. Countryman and Barry each ripped two round trippers each.

How It Happened

• The Gulls seized control of the game early with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Gulls got the eight runs on just five hits as they also had a pair of hit batters and a walk. Robbie Jones also had a grand slam in the inning for Salisbury.

• Salisbury got three more in the second as the lead ballooned to 11-0.

• Both teams scored runs in the third and York scored a single run in the top of the fourth to make the score 12-2. The Sea Gulls removed all doubt about the final result with a four spot in the bottom of the fourth.

• Salisbury closed out the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

 

SPARTAN NOTES:

The Spartans have now lost seven straight against Salisbury and fall to 46-70-1 all-time against the Sea Gulls … the Spartan pitching staff walked a season-high eight batters and hit two more in the game two loss … Spartan pitching allowed eight home runs in the two games and have now allowed 10 round trippers in their last three games … senior Logan Countryman tied a career high with four hits in game one while his two home runs also established a new career high … York was just one of three teams to finish with a league record above .500 … Salisbury won the league at 17-1 followed by CNU at 15-3 … seven of the ten teams in the league were .500 or below … the CAC has just three teams with overall winning records (Salisbury, CNU, Wesley).

 

UP NEXT:

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they open up the Capital Athletic Conference tournament by hosting fourth seeded Wesley College. The Spartans are the tournament's third seed after York went 10-8 in the league. Wesley finished with a league record of 9-9.
