How It Happened

• The Spartans had some two out lightening in the bottom of the third. The rally was started with a Garrett Southern double to left center. Collin Crowell singled to center to plate Southern with York's first run. Zach Hossler then made it 3-0 three pitches later as he jacked a two run rocket over the right field wall. The home run was his first of the year.

• York made it 4-0 as Christian Bilan scored on a Grant Oberholtzer RBI ground out in the bottom of the fourth.

• While the Spartan offense was coming to life, sophomore Jeff Noss was giving the Spartans a fantastic spot start as he was perfect through five innings.

• The Saints finally got to Noss in the sixth inning as Marlon Mitchell broke up the perfect game with an infield single that was very close at the bag. Ryan Scheufele then drew a walk to put Saints at first and second with no outs. After Noss got a strikeout, Lorenzo Calderon laid down a beautiful bunt base hit. A Spartan throwing error allowed a run to score and advanced the runners to second and third. Brandon Savage then laced a line drive sacrifice fly to right, cutting the Spartan lead to 4-2.

• After two innings of stellar relief work by Will Grega, the Saints reached Grega for a pair of runs to tie the game. Savage drilled a solo home run to right field to lead off the inning, cutting the Spartan lead to 4-3. Grega got the first out of the inning on a ground out. Then Karlis Graubics reached on a fielding error to extend the inning. The Saints would eventually take advantage of the miscue with a Javier Herrera RBI single to right, his first base hit of the year as the Saints tied the game at four.

• The Spartans got their second straight walk off win at home as Logan Countryman began the frame with a single up the middle. The ball was stopped by the Saint second baseman as he threw the ball away trying to get Countryman. That set the stage for Grant Oberholtzer to move Countryman to third with a sacrifice bunt. Patrick Clement then lashed a game-winning single to right, scoring Countryman with the winning run.

How It Happened

• The Spartans opened the scoring with a four run second inning started with a Patrick Clement RBI single to center. The Spartans then loaded the bases and got their second run when Zach Hossler drew a bases loaded walk. York made it 4-0 on a crazy play that started out as a fielder's choice and ended with two Marymount errors that scored two runs for York.

• The Spartans made it 5-0 with a single run in the third as Michael Moore scored on a two-out error.

• Freshman Casey Fitzsimmons made the spot start for York and the right hander was fantastic through the first six innings as he scattered a pair of hits. The Saints finally got to Fitzsimmons in the top of the seventh. The freshman got a pair of outs to start the inning but Karlis Graubics singled to start the uprising. Roy Coates then stroked a triple off the wall in right to plate Graubics with Marymount's first run of the game. Coates came around to score on a Ryan Scheufele single to right. The Saints got their third run of the inning on a wild pitch and then a fourth run on a stolen base and a throwing error. Fitzsimmons' final line says he gave up four runs but he was far better than that as he gave York an outstanding start when they needed it.

• The Saints went to the bullpen in the seventh as they brought shortstop Connor Hall into the game. That was the move of the game as Hall shut the Spartans down completely over the final 2.2 innings as he struck out four and did not allow a base runner during his outing.

• Marymount won the game in the eighth inning as the Saints reached the Spartan pen for a pair of runs. The first run came on a Brandon Orbe RBI double to right. The double was a routine pop fly to shallow center that fell because the Spartans were playing the infield in to cut off the run at third. Coates then drove in the game winner with a sharp single up the middle that Hossler was able to flag down but unable to make a play on the run at the plate.

The Spartans are now 4-4 all time against the Saints … York is now 4-2 in one-run games … York now has four last at-bat wins and they have all come in conference play … the games were choppy defensively as there were four errors in the first game and seven errors in the second game … Marymount had five errors in game two which led to just two unearned runs for the Spartans … York was held to a season-low five hits in the nightcap … York got a pair of great spot starts from Jeff Noss and Casey Fitzsimmons … Noss and Fitzsimmons combined to throw 12.2 innings, allow eight hits, six runs, four earned runs, eight strikeouts and one walk as they both got no decisions in their outings … the Spartans finished their six-games in five-days stretch with a mark of 3-3.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they step out of conference play to host the Messiah Falcons. First pitch from Jaquet Field is set for 3:30 pm.
