How It Happened

• The Profs used a monstrous first inning to put the Spartans on their heels. Rowan pounced on York early with four runs in the top of the first inning on four hits off of starting pitcher Andrew Ross. It started with two singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Joe Sadler singled to score one, and then Matt Jolly doubled, scoring two more. Sadler would come around for the fourth run on a wild pitch from Ross. The Spartans failed to earn a hit in the bottom of the first, and the Profs added another run in the second inning. Jason Clapper, who went 3-for-4, singled, scoring Alex Kokos and giving Rowan a 5-0 lead.

• York punched back in the bottom of the second, when Christian Bilan led off with a single. Bilan finished with three hits. He moved to second when Michael Moore was hit by a pitch. With one out, Grant Oberholtzer singled down the right field line bringing Bilan home and Moore to third. Moore didn't stay there long, though, as Patrick Clement advanced him on a groundout to make it 5-2.

• Neither team could get anything going in the third or fourth innings, but Rowan added two more to their lead in the top of the fifth when Jolly and Sadler both scored on a Monny Strickland single. Casey Fitzsimmons was able to guide the Spartans through those scoreless innings before giving up those two runs, pitching three and one-third innings.

• Again, York answered in the bottom half. With two outs, Zach Hossler singled to center. He moved to third when Seth Brosius reached on an error, bringing Bilan back up to the plate. Bilan singled down the line, scoring Hossler, bringing the Spartans to 7-3.

• Strickland drove in another run in the top of the ninth, and Brosius brought Collin Crowell home in the bottom of the inning, but York was unable to overcome a slow start, falling 8-4.

The Spartans are now 11-15 all-time against the Profs, and have now lost two in a row against Rowan …  it was the eighth game of the season that York has recorded at least 10 hits … York was held without an extra-base hit for just the second time of the season … the Spartans struck out just once on the day, tying the lowest total on the year … Christian Bilan is now hitting .385, leading players with at least 10 at-bats … Bilan also boasts a .435 on-base percentage and .519 slugging percentage.

York will go on the road to take on PSU-Harrisburg on Tuesday, after it was postponed on March 23. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. Last year, the Spartans split with the Lions, winning on the road before dropping the game at home.
