Baseball Earns a Split at Wesley

DOVER, DEL -  The York College baseball team split a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wesley College on Saturday afternoon in Dover, Delaware. The Wolverines captured game one 5-3 before the Spartans exploded for 12 runs on 22 hits in the nightcap as they earned the 12-0 win.

How It Happened

• York opened the game one scoring with a Michael Moore RBI ground out in the top of the first.

• The Wolverines struck for a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Wesley got the first run on a passed ball, the second run on an RBI single to center from Deshawn Aiken. The third run came on a Chris Seibert RBI single to left.

Christian Bilan cut the York deficit to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Collin Crowell.

• York tied the game in the top of the fourth as Grant Oberholtzer launched a solo home run to lead off the inning.

• Wesley took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice from Trey Mears.

• The Spartans looked like they had tied the game in the top of the seventh as Crowell tried to score on a Zach Hossler double but Crowell was cut down at the plate for the second out of the inning.

• Wesley added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on an Aaron Briggs RBI double.

• York got a pair of runners in the top of the ninth but wouldn't be able to push them across as York had their four game win streak.

How It Happened

• The Spartan offense erupted in game two. The Green and White opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Christian Bilan plated Seth Brosius with a two-out RBI double. Grant Oberholtzer then plated Bilan with an RBI single, giving York the 2-0 lead.

• The lead remained 2-0 until the Spartans added a single run in the sixth courtesy of a Bilan solo home run to lead off the inning.

• York blew it wide open in the seventh as York dented the plate seven times to turn a close game into a rout. All seven of the runs came with two outs as York banged out eight hits in the inning. Garrett Southern and Collin Crowell each had a pair of RBIs in the inning.

• York closed out the scoring with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. The eighth inning run came on a Patrick Clement RBI double. The ninth inning run came on a Logan Countryman sacrifice fly.



The Spartans are now 21-17 all-time against the Wolverines … the Spartans and Wolverines have split their last ten meetings with five wins for each squad … senior Elliot Mortimer twirled his second shutout of the year as he scattered eight hits in game two … the Spartans' 22 hits in game two was a season high by six hits (16 vs. John Jay on March 3) … the four doubles in game two matches a season high and that's the fourth time they have banged out four two-baggers in a game … York hit a home run in each game on Saturday, the first two home runs in an official game this year … York struck out just one time in game two after fanning eight times in game one … the game two shutout was York's second of the year with the first coming in the 7-0 season opening win over Johnson& Wales on February 27 … Mortimer's one walk in the night cap was a season low for the Spartans in a game … York pitchers combined to strike out 16 in the two games while they walked four … the doubleheader kicks off a stretch of six games in six days for the Green and White.



The Spartans are scheduled to return to action on Sunday afternoon as they are to host nationally ranked Rowan University in a non-conference contest from Jaquet Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.

The Spartans also rescheduled last week's game at Penn State Harrisburg. The Spartans and Lions will now play Tuesday afternoon in Middletown. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
