Spartans Conquer Back-and-Forth Tilt With Stevenson
YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team held on to win a back-and-forth battle on Saturday afternoon with 7-6 victory over Stevenson University at Jaquet Field.
York (28-13) put up three runs in the seventh to take a 7-4 lead and then received a solid pitching performance from winning pitcher Andrew Tucci (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) out of the bullpen to hold Stevenson (14-26) to just two runs en route to the 7-6 win.
Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) smoked an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score senior Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) to start the scoring rally in the seventh. Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) extended the Spartan lead with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) and then freshman Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Dowingtown East) poked an RBI single to center field as Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) trotted home for York's seventh and final run.
The Mustangs made a run at the Spartan lead in the eighth, scoring two runs with less than two outs. However, with two runners still on base, Tucci buckled down and forced a fly out and a pop up two leave the two runners stranded and keep York in the lead.
Tucci earned his first career victory with the win today and improves to 1-0 on the season as he pitched two innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Miele earned the save, his second of the season, as he entered to pitch the ninth inning, allowing zero runs and zero hits with one strikeout.
Freshman Randy Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) started the game for York on the bump and pitched six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with a career-high seven strikeouts and two walks.
Stevenson's Brooks Miller was credited with the loss as he pitched one inning in relief, allowing one run, York's go-ahead run, on one hit.
The Spartans return to action and will look to improve their resume for a spot in the postseason with a home doubleheader against DeSales University on Sunday. First pitch from Jaquet Field is scheduled for noon.
