Scranton Notches Two Walk Off Wins in Sweep of York

SCRANTON, PA – The York College baseball team suffered a pair of one run losses in a non-conference doubleheader at Scranton on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans dropped game one 12-11 in nine innings in the opener followed by a 3-2 walk off loss in the nightcap.

The opener was an offensive showcase as the teams combined for 23 runs and 34 hits. The Spartans started the scoring early with a single run in the first. The Royals took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. After a scoreless second, York got a pair of tallies in the top of the third only to have Scranton come right back and tie the game at three in the bottom of the inning.

The game was tied at four in the top of the sixth when the Spartans plated a pair of runs to take an 6-4 lead. The Royals exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning as they took a two run advantage to the top of the seventh. York got a two run pinch-hit homer from Sean Mohollen (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven), tying the game at eight.

The teams would go back-and-forth in extra innings. Both teams got a pair of runs in the eighth and York got a single run in the top of the ninth as Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) drilled a home run to right center.

Scranton got a trio of hits in the bottom of the ninth to capture the win. Brian Healy got the game tying single. Healy advanced to second base before scoring the game winner on a Ross Danzig single up the middle.

Danzig paced the 19-hit Scranton attack, as he was 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Healy was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored while Michael Umerich and Michael Gaeta each added two knocks.

Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) led the Spartan offense with three hits each. Herr added three RBI and a run scored as he blasted his fifth home run of the year. Pitzer also homered, his fourth of the year, as he drove in two and scored two others. Wenzel blasted a pair of home runs as he drove in two and scored three times.

Matthew Calamoneri earned the win in relief for Scranton as he tossed 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk. He improves to 3-5 for the year.

David McGee (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) suffered the loss for York as he was charged with two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings of work. He is now 0-1. Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) started for York and allowed six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 5.2 innings of work.

The nightcap was far less offensive. The Spartans got on the board in the top of the fourth courtesy of a J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley) RBI single.

Scranton tied the game in the bottom of the fifth and took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. York tied the game in the top of the seventh as Wenzel blasted his third home run of the day to lead off the frame.

The Royals got the game winner on a bases loaded walk with one out as they completed the sweep.

Danzig and Tyler Ferretti each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored to pace Scranton.

Senior Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) went 3-for-3 with a run scored in a game two while Wenzel added two hits including his sixth home run of the year. Oleniacz had two hits and an RBI for YCP.

Josh Bayzick earned the win by retiring the lone hitter he faced in the top of the seventh. He improves to 2-1 overall. James Sawyer started and allowed a run on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk in six innings of work.

Freshman lefty Randy Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. He struck out two and walked five.

The Spartans are now 26-12 overall while the Royals improve to 11-21 with the sweep.

York continues the home stretch of their campaign on Tuesday when they host nationally ranked Kean at Jaquet Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm in York.
