Philippi and the Offense Too Much for F&M as Spartans Keep Rolling

LANCASTER, PA – The York College baseball squad remained hot as the Spartans stepped out of conference and downed Franklin & Marshall 11-5 in Lancaster on a beautiful Thursday afternoon.

The Spartans, winners of four straight, improve to 19-3 overall with the win. York is ranked 23rd in the ABCA Coaches Poll and 24th in the D3baseball.com Poll.  The Diplomats fall to 10-14 overall with the loss.

The Spartans got on top of the Diplomats early with two runs in the second and three runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead. In the second, Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) plated the first run with an RBI single and he came around to score on a Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) RBI double to left center.

York's scoring in the third started with a majestic solo blast to left from Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor). After Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) singled up the middle, Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) dented the wall in left field with a double to score Wenzel with one out. Miele came around to score when Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) doubled to left center.

The Diplomats answered back with a four spot off Spartan starter Randy Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), cutting the York lead to one.

F&M tied the game with a single run in the fourth but Frankenfield minimized the damage and got out of the inning without any further Diplomat scoring.

The Spartans took the lead for good in the fifth as Wenzel started the rally with a single to right. Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) followed with a single up the middle to put Spartans at first and second. After a Diplomat double play left Wenzel standing on third with two outs, Pitzer laced a double to center to score Wenzel.

That would be more than enough for reliever Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) as the junior came on in relief of Frankenfield with two outs in fifth inning. Philippi got the final out of the fifth and then handcuffed the Diplomats the remainder of the game. F&M got just two base runners on a walk and a Spartan error over the final four innings of the game.

The Green and White tacked on a single run in the seventh on a Herr RBI single to left.

York gave Philippi four insurance runs in the ninth as the Green and White plated four runs on five hits to provide the Spartans with the final six run margin of victory. The big blow in the inning came from Pitzer as he drilled a two-run homer to deep right field. The other runs came from a Miele sacrifice fly and a Steffy RBI single.

Philippi earned the win, his first of the year, as he was nearly perfect. The junior right hander tossed 4.1 hitless innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Frankenfield allowed five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 4.2 innings of work.

Chris Mathewson suffered the loss as he allowed one run on three hits in his one inning of work as he falls to 0-1. Eric Bateman started and allowed five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in his four innings of work.

Pitzer had a huge day, as the junior was 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. His home run was his third of the year. Wenzel had four more hits and three runs scored as he is 14-for-19 (.736) in his last four games. Herr went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Hershey was 1-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Matt Mezansky and Avery Attinson led the Diplomats with two hits each. Mezansky added an RBI and a run scored.

The Spartans jump back into conference play for their final CAC games of the regular season when they host Christopher Newport in a twin bill on Saturday. First pitch for game one is set for 12:00 pm at Jaquet Field.
