York Keeps Unblemished CAC Record Intact With Comeback Win In Ninth

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Two runs in the top of the ninth were all the York College baseball team needed to claim a 2-1 comeback road victory over CAC newcomer PSU-Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans (13-2, 9-0 CAC) scored their lowest run total and recorded their second-lowest hit total in a win this season to remain perfect in conference play.

With one out in the top of the ninth, a single to left field by junior Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) set the Spartan rally train in motion. Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) was hit by a pitch and Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) reached on an error, but Miele was tagged out at third by a relay throw from right field after he rounded the bag too far.

Now with two outs and two runners on, another error by the Lions (4-18, 1-9) allowed Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Dowingtown East) to reach first and Pitzer to score the game-tying run. The next batter up was Logan Countryman (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) who singled and scored Porter from third for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

PSU-Harrisburg tallied its run in the third inning after two Spartan errors on consecutive batters allowed the Lions to reach base and score the run to take a 1-0 lead.

Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) earned the victory and improves to 4-0 as he pitched a complete game, allowing just one run (unearned), on seven hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.

Clint Hicks was credited with the loss and falls to 0-6 as he went eight and two-thirds, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday as they welcome in non-conference neighbor Messiah to Jaquet Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
