Hershey Leads the Spartans to Win in CAC Opener
ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The York College baseball squad opened up Capital Athletic Conference play with a 7-0 win over St. Mary's College on a dreary Friday afternoon in St. Mary's City, MD.
York improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAC while the Seahawks fall to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the CAC.
York got a huge day from senior centerfielder Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) as he was 4-for-5 with three RBI in the conference opener.
The Spartans jumped on the board early in the first as Hershey doubled to center to lead off the game. After a strikeout and a ground out allowed Hershey to move to third, Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) walked to put Spartans at the corners. Miele stole second and Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) promptly delivered Hershey and Miele with a single to center.
York added three runs in the top of the fourth. Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) had an RBI single in the frame while Hershey added a two run double to right as York took a 5-0 lead.
Hershey pushed the lead to 6-0 with an RBI double to left center in the top of the sixth. The Spartans closed out the scoring with a Pitzer RBI single in the seventh.
Three Spartans combined to toss the shutout. Starter Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) tossed the first six innings of the game to earn the win. He scattered four hits with three strikeouts and six walks as he improves to 1-0. Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) was great in his two inning outing as he allowed one hit with one strikeout as he faced just six batters. Andrew Tucci (Birdboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) tossed the ninth and preserved the shutout with two strikeouts.
Sam Beatty suffered the loss as he allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. He falls to 1-2 with the loss. The St. Mary's bullpen allowed two runs on six hits over the final four innings of the game.
Hershey picked up four of the Spartans' 11 hits, as three of his hits were doubles. Pitzer also had a big day with three hits, three RBI and on run scored. Steffy chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Brandon Eady led the Seahawks with two hits. St. Mary's was limited to six hits in the loss.
The Spartans conclude their eight game trip with a double header against Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.
