Hershey's Game-Winner Lifts York to 13-12 Victory
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Senior Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) singled in Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lead the York College baseball team to a 13-12 win over Manhattanville in the opening game of the Spartans' southern trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Spartans improve to 1-1 overall while the Valiants fall to 4-2.
The game was back and forth all day long. York jumped out to a 5-1 lead after just two innings of play. The Valiants cut the lead to 5-3 before the Spartans erupted for a five-run bottom of the third.
The game settled down just a bit in the fourth as Manhattanville scored a single run, cutting the York lead to 10-4. Things got interesting in the top of the fifth as the Valiants plated five runs. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Robbie Lynch as the third baseman blasted a two run shot over the wall. York got a single run back in the bottom of the fifth as Hershey reached on an error and scored on a Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) double to left.
The Valiants scored one in the top of the seventh and two more in the top of the eighth to take a 12-11 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the frame, Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) double to right center, tying the game at 12.
That set the stage for Hershey's ninth inning heroics. Steffy reach and was sacrificed to second on a bunt. After a fly out to center, Hershey delivered the game-winning run to give York its first victory of the year.
Miele earned the win out of the pen as the junior tossed two innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs on three hits with a strikeout. It is his first win as a Spartan. Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) started and did not get a decision as he allowed seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Joe Palmeri suffered the loss for the Valiants as he allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout in his 1.1 innings of work. Spencer Samelson started and allowed six runs on five hits with two walks in two innings of work.
The Spartans banged out 12 hits in the win led by Wenzel as the senior first baseman had two hits and a team-high four RBI. J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley) added two hits, three RBI and a run scored. Steffy was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) was the other Spartan with multiple hits as he went 2-for-3.
Lynch was dynamic for the Valiants as he was 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Lynch blasted two home runs while he also had a double. Chris Conklin contributed four hits and two runs scored while Joe Anselmi went 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they face Eastern University in the second game of their southern trip. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
