Miller Twirls a Gem as Spartans Slide Past Montclair State
YORK, PA - York College sophomore left-hander Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) tossed a gem as the Spartan baseball squad registered a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Montclair State University on Tuesday afternoon at Jaquet Field.
The Spartans improve to 20-18 overall while they Red Hawks fall to 12-16-1.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) singled to left and then moved to third on a booming double from Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin). Worthman scored on a deep sacrifice fly to center by Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill).
The Red Hawks wasted little time in responding as they strung together two singles and a two-run double from right fielder Timothy Byron to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second.
The two starting pitchers then took over as Miller and Montclair's Travis Della Volpe started plowing through the other team's lineup.
After Montclair scored two in the third, Miller retired 18 of the next 21 hitters he faced, keeping the Spartans in the game.
After Della Volpe retired 12 of 15 batters he faced in innings two through five, Herr greeted him with a double down the left field line to open the sixth. Cohen scored Herr three pitches later as he ripped a double down the right field line, tying the game at two. The inning had the potential to be bigger after a Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) bunt single put Spartans at the corner. However, Della Volpe induced a double play and got a hard ground ball back to the mound to end the Spartan threat.
The Spartans finally broke through big time in the seventh as Jimmy King (Frederick, Md./Frederick) singled with one out to open the rally. King was sacrificed to second and scored when Worthman dumped a single into left field, allowing King to score the go-ahead run.
The Green and White tacked on two more runs on a Frankenfield two-run single after a key Montclair error prolonged the inning.
Miller came out to start the ninth inning in search of the complete game but a lead off walk and a single put runners at first and third. Pinch hitter Matt Moreno lifted a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the Spartan lead to 5-3. Spartan head coach Mike Scappa then went to the pen to get closer Mike Sarecky (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood). Sarecky gave up a single to the first batter he faced but got a pair of ground outs to second to end the game.
Miller was outstanding as he improves to 6-2 overall. He tossed 8.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Sarecky picked up his fifth save with his 0.2 innings of action.
Della Volpe also posted a strong start as the left-hander tossed 6.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He falls to 2-2 with the loss.
Herr had a great day at the plate, as the junior catcher was 3-for-4 with two runs scored including his 13th and 14th doubles of the year. Frankenfield finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI while Worthman continues to close in on 200 career hits, as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Worthman is now just one hit short of joining the 200-career hit club.
Anderson Rosa and Louis Martini led Montclair with two hits each. Byron finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon when they host Penn State – Berks in a non-conference contest. First pitch at Jaquet Field is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
