Spartans Fall to UMW in CAC Tournament Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Mary Washington in the opening round of the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament in first round action on Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA.

The Spartans, who are the tournament's fifth seed, fall to 16-16 overall while the Eagles, who are the second seed, improve to 21-16 overall.

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first courtesy two singles and a run-scoring wild pitch.

The Green and White tied the game in the third as Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) drew a two-out walk. He moved to second on a Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) infield single and scored on a Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) single up the middle.

The Eagles answered right back in the bottom of the third as the Spartan defense aided in the UMW uprising. The Green and White committed two crucial errors that led to both Eagle runs being unearned as UMW took a 3-1 lead.

The Spartans had a great chance to get something going in the eighth as Worthman was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Eagle starter Torey Mancari coaxed a key double play prior to Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) stroking a double to left center. Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) was hit by a pitch but reliever Bernard Mayflower got Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) to line out to center to end the threat.

Mary Washington added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. The run gave Mayflower some cushion as he allowed a two-out double followed by a single in the top of the ninth before getting the final out of the game to earn the save.

Mancari earned the win as he tossed 7.2 innings, allowing a run on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He improved to 3-2. Mayflower picked up his first save of the year as he scattered two hits in his 1.1 innings of work.

Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) suffered his second straight loss as he allowed four runs, two earned, on ten hits with four strikeouts and a walk. He falls to 2-5 with the loss.

Three Eagles had two hits each in the win led by T.J. Cretney as he was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jono Haught had two knocks and a run scored while Seth Jordan had a pair of singles for UMW.

Frankenfield led the Spartan offense as he was 3-for-3 in the loss. Herr collected York's lone RBI while Cohen and Jimmy King (Frederick, Md./Frederick) each had a double for York.

The Spartans must now battle back from the losers bracket in the double-elimination tournament. The Spartans will face sixth-seeded St. Mary's in an elimination game on Friday morning at 9:00 am in Salisbury, MD, the site of the remaining tournament games. The winner of that game will play on Saturday at 12:30 pm against an opponent to be determined.
