Baseball Splits Final CAC Twinbill of the Year
FROSTBURG, MD – The York College baseball squad split their final Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader of the year as Frostburg State won the opener 6-0 while the Spartans took the nightcap 8-2 on Saturday in Frostburg, MD.
The Spartans are now 16-15 overall and conclude the conference regular season with a mark of 6-9. The Bobcats are now 20-12 overall and 7-8 in the CAC.
In the opener, Bobcat starter Doug Politz handcuffed the Spartans as he tossed the complete game shutout, scattering three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Politz improves to 3-2.
The Bobcats scored four runs in the second inning to seize the early lead. They tacked on single runs in the bottom of the third and the fifth innings to provide for their six-run margin of victory.
York's Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, five earned, on 10 hits with two walks. He falls to 4-2 with the loss.
J.K. Filauro led the Bobcats as he was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Kevin Kean added three hits and a run scored while Dylan Shupe was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Garrett Price also had a pair of hits for FSU.
The Spartans were led by Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) as he was 1-for-3 with York's only extra base hit with his third inning double.
In the nightcap, the Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead with a Shupe RBI single.
The Spartan tied the game in the top of the second courtesy of a Sean Mohollen (Rose Valley, Pa./Strath Haven) RBI ground out. The Spartans took the lead in the top of the third on a Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) RBI double.
York added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and then capped their scoring with a three-run sixth inning.
Tyler Alexander (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) earned the win on the mound as he tossed five solid innings, allowing a run on five hits. Alexander improves to 2-2 with the win. Alexander struck out three and walked three others in the win. Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) tossed the final two innings allowing a run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Curtis Randall took the loss for the Bobcats as he allowed four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work. He falls to 2-2 with the setback.
Senior Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) banged out three hits and also scored a run for York. Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) had two hits and three RBI while Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) each had two hits for the Green and White. Worthman added an RBI and a run scored while Frankenfield scored twice for York.
Shupe led the Bobcats as he was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans will open the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Their final seeding will be determined after Sunday's final CAC regular contest between Wesley and St. Mary's. If Wesley wins, the Spartans will be the fifth seed and travel to second-seeded Mary Washington. If St. Mary's wins, the Spartans will be the sixth seed and travel to top-seeded Salisbury. Game time on Tuesday will be 3:30 regardless of the site of the contest.
