Four-Run Ninth Lifts Spartans Over Stevenson
STEVENSON, MD – The York College baseball squad used a four-run ninth inning to post a 9-5 non-conference victory over Stevenson University on Wednesday in Stevenson, MD.
The Spartans improve to 15-13 overall while the Mustangs fall to 19-10 with the loss.
The Spartans fell behind early as the Mustangs scored a run in the first and two more in the third to take the early 3-0 lead.
The Green and White got back into the game in the fifth as senior Jimmy King (Frederick, Md./Frederick) blasted a grand slam to right, giving York a temporary 4-3 lead. The home run was the first of the year for King and the second of his career.
The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single from Davis Grove.
York took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) RBI single to right. The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom the eighth on a Spartan error as the game headed to the ninth tied at five.
That set the stage for the big ninth inning for the Spartans. The inning started when King coaxed a one-out walk. After a ground out, Worthman plated King with a double to center. Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) singled to right to score Worthman as the York lead grew to 7-5. Freshman Austin Calaman (York, Pa./Dallastown) capped the inning with a long two-run homer to left as the Spartans won their second straight and their sixth of their last seven games.
Mike Sarecky (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) earned the win as he tossed the final 1.2 innings of the game to earn his second win in as many days. Sarecky tossed 1.1 innings, allowing two hits with a strikeout as he improves to 3-1. Josh Kohn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) started and went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Matt Goodman (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) tossed 2.0 innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout. The three Spartan pitchers did not walk a batter in the game.
Ryan Kellough suffered the loss as allowed a run on a walk and strikeout in his two innings of work. Matt Myers started and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings of work.
Worthman and Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) led the Spartans with three hits each. Worthman added two RBI and a run scored. King went 1-for-2 with a career-high four RBI and two runs scored. Calaman blasted his first collegiate home run for two RBI in his only at-bat of the game.
Heath Johnson and Troy Miller led the Mustangs with four hits each. Johnson scored three runs while Miller had an RBI. Scott Merkel added three hits and an RBI.
The Spartans conclude their Capital Athletic Conference regular season with a trip to Frostburg State to face the Bobcats in a three-game series starting Friday afternoon. Game one of the series is set for a 4:00 pm start followed by a pair of seven inning games on Saturday.
