YORK, PA - The York College baseball squad posted a sweep of first-place Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in York. York won the first game 5-0 and survived a close one hanging on for a 4-3 win in game two.
With the victories, York now improves to 13-12 overall and 5-6 in the CAC while Mary Washington drops to 17-13 and 7-4 in the CAC.
In game one, York's offense finally got rolling in the third on a Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./ Old Mill) RBI single. They would strike again in the fifth on Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) single trough the left side. Freshman designated hitter Austin Calaman (York, Pa./Dallastown) also picked up a RBI on a single through the left side as the Spartan lead grew to 3-0. Frankenfield would end up scoring later in the inning on an error by the Eagles.
York closed out the scoring in the sixth on a Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./ Dallastown) RBI single. Spartan offense touched up Eagles starter Mike Straub for 12 hits in the game as he picked up the loss.
Spartan starter Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) turned in a stellar performance going seven strong innings only allowing four hits on the day. Gurganus record improves to 2-3 on the year as he has pitched very well in his last few outings. He struck out four and walked three in his first complete game shutout of the year. The complete game is his third and the shutout is the second for the Spartan staff this year.
The Green and White continued their hot offense in game two, touching up Eagles starter Bernard Mayflower early with a Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa/ Lower Dauphin) RBI single up the middle. Cohen followed up with a two run double to left center and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Spartans starter Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, NY/ Briarcliff) picked up the victory improving to 4-1 on the year. Miller posted another solid performance going 5.1 innings, giving up three runs with one strikeout. Mike Sarecky (Brookeville, Md./ Sherwood) closed the game out with a four-out save, his third save of the season.
The Spartans look to sweep the series against the Eagles on Sunday at Jaquet Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
