Offense Held in Check as Baseball Falls to Randolph-Macon

YORK, PA  - The offensive struggles of the York College baseball team continued on a blustery Thursday afternoon in York as the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets handed the Spartans a 9-2 setback in a non-conference contest.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 10-9 overall while the Spartans fall to 7-10.

Spartan starter Josh Kohn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) was dancing with danger from the first inning on. The senior left hander kept the Yellow Jackets off the board in the first three innings but it wasn't pretty as he stranded eight runners over those opening three frames.

The Spartans got a lead for Kohn courtesy of a two-out RBI double from senior Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) in the bottom of the third. That lead would not last long.

Kohn's luck ran out in the fourth as the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with an infield hit, a walk and a fielder's choice. Kohn then hit a batter and walked a batter to give RMC a 2-0 lead. Kohn was lifted but the Yellow Jackets struck for four more runs as they took a 6-1 lead.

The Spartans had a golden opportunity in the fifth as Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) singled to right to open the inning. He advanced to third on a Nic Long (North Wildwood, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) single to left. With the two Spartans at the corners, Adam Bartholomew (Haddonfield, N.J./Bishop Eustace) ripped a shot just inside the first base bag. RMC first baseman Jon Witt was in perfect position to make the play after holding Long on base as he snared the line drive and touched first for the double play. That tide-turning play slowed the Spartan momentum. The Yellow Jackets then made sure any York momentum came to a total halt with three runs in the top sixth as they took a commanding 9-1 lead.

York cut into the lead in the sixth courtesy of a Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) two-out RBI single. The Spartans would load the bases in the frame but Porter's single would be the only scoring play for York.

The Spartans would get only two runners the rest of the way as York has dropped six of their last eight games.

Matt Fischgrund started and earned the wins for the Yellow Jackets as he went 5.2 innings, scattering eight hits. He allowed two runs with two strikeouts and no walks as he improves to 1-1 with the victory.

Five Jacket relievers combined to allowed two hits with a walk and four strikeouts over the final 3.2 innings of the game.

Kohn suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on four hits with seven walks, three strikeouts and a hit batter in three-plus innings of work. He falls to 2-1 with the loss. Freshman Matt Goodman (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) was the Spartans' third pitcher was a big brigth spot for York. Goodman was outstanding as he tossed two perfect innings including two strikeouts for York.

Five different Yellow Jackets had two hits in the game led by Nate Meiners who had a game-high three RBI for RMC. Witt finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Jeb Weymouth was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Worthman, Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), and Long led the Spartan offense with two hits each. Worthman and Porter each had an RBI for the 10-hit attack.

Randolph-Macon had 10 runners left on base in the game with just two stranded runners coming in the final six innings while York left eight runners on base.

The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to St. Mary's College to face the Seahawks in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. First pitch from St. Mary's City is set for 3:30 pm.
