Bad Sixth Inning Costs Spartans the Rubber Match Against Wesley
YORK, PA - The York College Spartans Baseball dropped the third game of their Capital Athletic Conference weekend series against Wesley as the Wolverines posted a 5-1 win at Jaquet Field in York on Sunday. The Wolverines captured two of three during the weekend.
The Spartans fall to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in the CAC while the Wolverines improve to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the league.
The story over the first five innings of the game was very good pitching. York's Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) and Wesley's Rob Diamond took turn handling the offenses early in the contest.
In the top of the second, Wenzel cruised through the top of the frame one only five pitches. In the bottom of the inning, York's Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) got on base when Cory Smith of Wesley had a fielding error. Cohen moved to second on a ground out and then was then able to score off on an RBI single by Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Wesley had runners on second and third with two outs, when Trevor Mears hit a bullet to right field. York's Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahockon) made a spectacular diving catch to keep Wesley off the board.
The sixth inning proved to be big trouble for the Spartans. Wesley's Morgan Rupp started the inning off with a double and then scored on an RBI single by Steve Perone to tie the game up. Bases were then quickly loaded and then Wenzel walked in the go-ahead run. That proved to be the end of Wenzel's day as Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) came out of the pen. Unfortunately for York, Philippi struggled as he walked one and hit two others as the Spartans found themselves down 5-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans looked to gain some more ground back. Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) got on base with a walk and a single to open the inning. Diamond was able to get out of the inning courtesy of a double play and a strikeout and the Spartans didn't threaten again in the game.
Diamond earned the win as he went six strong innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk as he improves to 2-1. Eric Willey earned the save as he tossed the final three innings, allowing just a Herr ninth inning single during his stint.
Wenzel suffered the loss as the junior went 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He falls to 2-1.
Cory Smith and Perone led the Wesley offense with tow hits in five at-bats. Perone added an RBI and a run scored.
Herr paced the York offense with three hits while Pitzer finished the game 2-for-3 with the Spartans' lone RBI.
The Spartans are slated to return to Jaquet Field on Tuesday afternoon when they host Randolph-Macon in a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
