#6 Salisbury Sweeps Spartans in CAC Opener
SALISBURY, MD – The sixth-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls swept the York College Spartan baseball squad in a Capital Athletic Conference twin bill in Salisbury, MD on Saturday. The Sea Gulls won game one 6-2 and completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
The Sea Gulls improve to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The Sea Gulls jumped on top with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as the Spartan defense committed three errors in the frame. York tied the game in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon). The Green and White left the go-ahead run stranded at third as Sea Gull starter Andrew Levy got strike out and a fly out to end the York threat.
Salisbury took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of four runs on five hits.
Levy earned the win as he allowed just two runs on eighth hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in a complete game effort. He improves to 4-0 with the win. Spartan ace Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk in six innings. He falls to 1-2 with the loss.
Quinn Griffith led the Sea Gull offense with two hits and two RBI including his sixth double of the year. Bill Root also had a pair of knocks and a run scored for the hosts.
Worthman led York with two hits and a run scored in four at-bats. Cohen and Frankenfield each had a hit and an RBI for the Spartans.
In the nightcap, Salisbury got all they needed in the first two innings as they got three runs in the first and three more in the second to sprint out to the 6-0 lead.
The Spartans got three back in the top of the fifth but it would be too-little-too-late. Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) had a two-run triple in the frame and came around to score on a Salisbury error.
The Spartans would not be able to get anything going in the sixth or seventh innings as they fell below .500 for the first time this season.
Brett Collacchi earned the win on the mound for the Gulls as he went six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. He improves to 3-0. Danny Druzgala picked up the save as he pitched a scoreless seventh for Salisbury.
Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked three as he falls to 1-1.
Evan Graci led Salisbury with three hits while he also had an RBI and a run scored. Root and Nick Gentry each had two hits while Gentry scored twice and also had an RBI on his second home run of the year. Ken O'Neill had two RBI on his second inning two-run single.
Hershey led York with two hits and two RBI including his first triple of the year. Worthman was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
