Scranton Spoils 2013 Spartan Home Opener
YORK, PA – The University of Scranton Royals baseball squad spoiled the York College home opener 11-8 on a brilliant early-March Saturday afternoon in York.
The Spartans fall to 4-4 overall while the Royals improve to 3-2.
The first two innings featured a pitcher's dual as York's Tyler Alexander (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and Scranton's Bobby Della Polla were both strong in the early going.
That changed for Alexander in the third as the Royals nicked him for one run after there were two outs in the inning, aided by a two-out walk that prolonged the inning.
The Royals added an unearned run in the fourth and then blew the game wide open in the fifth. The Royals opened the fifth with a double, a walk and then a throwing error by Alexander on a bunt play. That opened the floodgates, as the Royals would get five runs on four hits and two Spartans errors, extending their lead to 7-0.
The Spartans finally got to Della Polla in the fifth. The uprising came with two outs as senior Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) sprayed a single to left to score designated Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) from third for the Spartans' first run. Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) then doubled to deep left, scoring Richard Duffee (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Worthman to cut York's deficit to 7-3.
The Spartans couldn't hold the Royals in the top of the sixth as Scranton got all three runs back plus one. Again, shoddy Spartan defense aided the Scranton effort as the Royals got four runs on just one hit, two errors, and two walks. All four of the runs in the inning were unearned.
The Spartans got something going in the eighth but the rally again came with two outs. Nic Long (North Wildwood, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) had a two-run double while Adam Bartholomew (Haddonfield, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and Worthman had RBI singles. Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) drove in the fifth run with a bases loaded walk.
The bottom of the ninth started out with great promise as Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) doubled to open the inning. Unfortunately for York, Josh Bayzick got a strikeout, a ground out and a fly out to end the game.
Della Polla earned the win as he went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and a strikeout. He improves to 2-0 with the win. Della Polla coaxed the Spartans into 12 groundouts including a pair of double plays. James Saywer was tagged for five runs on four hits with a walk in his 1.2 innings of work but Bayzick closed out the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. He walked one, allowed one hit and struck out two.
Alexander suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, three earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in his four-plus innings of work. He falls to 1-1 with the loss. Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) struggled with his control in his two inning outing as the right-hander allowed five runs, one earned on three hits and three walks. Mike Sarecky (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) tossed three strong innings to end the game as he scattered three hits over his stint.
Ross Danzig paced the Scranton offense as he banged out three hits with an RBI and a run scored. Tim LeCompte added two hits and two runs scored while Edward Ravert, Michael Trabulsi, and Matt Maghini each had a hit and two RBI for the Royals.
Worthman and Hershey powered the Spartan offense with two hits and two RBI each. Worthman also scored a run for the Green and White. Long added two RBI with his first double of the year. Bartholomew went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored off the bench for the Spartans.
The Spartans finished the game with five errors in the game, as seven of the Royals' 11 total runs were unearned. York has now allowed 20 unearned runs in eight games this season.
The Green and White returns to action on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Baltimore, MD to face Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference contest. First pitch in Baltimore is set for 3:30 pm.
