YORK, PA – The York College baseball team saw their six-game win streak and their 2012 season come to a close on Sunday as they fell to Franklin & Marshall 12-4 in a non-conference contest at Jaquet Field.
The Spartans end the season with a mark of 22-20 while the Diplomats conclude their campaign with a mark of 17-23.
The Spartans trailed early as the Diplomats scored one in the first and four in the second for the early 5-0 lead.
York got two back in the third thanks to a pair of Diplomat errors as the Spartans were back in the game. The Green and White trimmed the deficit by one more run in the fourth thanks to a Colin Porter sacrifice fly. The inning could have been bigger as the Spartans stranded a pair of runners in the frame.
The Diplomats blew the game open in the sixth as they plated five runs to turn a 5-3 edge into a 10-3 margin. F&M moved the lead to 12-3 with two runs in the top of the seventh. The Spartans closed out the scoring with a Jimmy King sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
Collin McCune earned the win as he was the first in a six-pitcher parade used by the Diplomats in the win. McCune went three innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with a strikeout. He improves to 1-0 with the win. The six Diplomat pitchers combined to allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts and seven walks.
Spartan sophomore Tyler Alexander suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. He walked one and struck out another as he ends the season with a mark of 1-4. Tommy Moran followed Alexander and allowed seven runs, five earned, in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out four and walked two during the final appearances of his collegiate career.
The Spartans received a pair of strong appearances from senior pitchers as KC Beshore and Brandon Ullom each closed out their time in the Green and White with scoreless innings. Ullom ends his career as the school record holder for appearances with 66.
J.T. Triantos led the Dips with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Aaron Gillette chipped in with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored while Tyler Veterano contributed three hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the 13-hit F&M attack.
Drew Frankenfield, Derek Pitzer, and Porter each had two hits to pace the Spartans. Porter added an RBI and a run scored while Pitzer dented the plate once for the Spartans. Senior Steve Tretter finished his career with a hit and an RBI.
The Spartans ended their season strong after starting the season 5-11. The Green and White graduates six seniors but returns seven of their eight every day players and three of their starting pitchers for the 2013 campaign.
