Top-Seeded Salisbury Edges York in CAC Tournament Slugfest

SALISBURY, MD – In an elimination game between the Capital Athletic Conference's two top seeded teams, the top-seeded Salisbury University Sea Gulls downed the second-seeded York College Spartans 11-10 in a slugfest on Saturday morning in Salisbury. The Sea Gulls advance to face undefeated Wesley in the third round of the tournament late Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a sacrifice fly from first baseman Nic Long in the top of the second.

The Sea Gulls put together a three-run fourth inning to take the two run lead. However, York answered with a three-run Colin Porter homer to left center as the Green and White took a short-lived 4-3 lead.

Salisbury's offense got into the Spartan bullpen in the bottom of the fifth as they plated three in the inning and then tacked on two more in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead.

The Spartan offense recaptured the lead with a five-run top of the eighth frame. York sent ten players to the plate, collected four hits, two walks and a hit batter as they took a 9-8 lead.

The Sea Gulls wasted little time in answering York with a trio of runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking an 11-9 lead heading into the final inning of play.

York got an unearned run in the top of the frame but left the tying run on first base as the Spartans were eliminated from the tournament.

Bill Morton earned the win in relief as he threw 1.2 innings, allowing an unearned run on two walks during his outing. He improves to 1-1 overall. Devin Gardner started for the Gulls and went seven innings, allowing six runs on six hits with two walks in the no-decision.

Senior Brandon Ullom suffered the loss as he allowed two runs on three hits in his two-thirds inning of work. He falls to 0-1 with the loss. Sophomore Tyler Alexander started and allowed six runs on nine hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Bill Root, Nick Gentry, and Kyle Hayman each had three hits for the Gulls. Root added two RBI and a run scored while Gentry contributed two runs scored and two RBI. Hayman scored twice while he also had an RBI. Johnny Schiotis chipped in with two hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

The Spartans offense was led by Porter as the sophomore shortstop drove in four while he scored another. Justin Cohen, Derek Pitzer, and Long each picked up two hits for the Green and White. Cohen scored twice while Pitzer added an RBI.

The Spartans close out their regular season with seven non-conference contests over the next two weeks. York begins that non-conference stretch of games with a road game at Montclair State on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch from Yogi Berra Stadium is set for 3:30 pm.
