Big Inning Lifts Wesley Past Spartans

SALISBURY, MD – The Wesley College baseball team used an eight run sixth inning to post a 15-5 win over York College in the second round of the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament in Salisbury, MD on Friday. The Spartans drop into the elimination bracket while the Wolverines stand as the only unbeaten team left in the double elimination tournament.

The Spartans fall to 17-18 overall while the Wolverines improve to 26-11.

The Wolverines reached freshman starter Dan Gurganus for a pair of runs in the first and three more in the third as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. York cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth as doubles from Drew Frankenfield, Derek Pitzer, and Nic Long gave the Green and White a pair of runs.

After a scoreless fifth, the Wolverines blew the game wide open with the eight run inning. The eight runs came on eight hits and three walks including a pair of free passes with the bases loaded.

York got a single run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh but it wouldn't be nearly enough as the Spartans fell below .500 for the season.

Jordan Lozzi earned the win for the Wolverines as he went eight innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Lozzi improves to 6-3 for the year.

Gurganus suffered the loss as he allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out four and walked two. The Spartans bullpen wasn't much relief as four Spartan pitchers combined to allowed seven runs on eight hits with five walks in 3.2 innings of action out of the pen.

Geoff Kimmel powered the Wolverine offense as he went 5-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored including his fifth home run of the year and his ninth double of the campaign. Sam Farnell added three hits, two RBI and two runs scored while Jon Carlson finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI. The Wolverines banged out 18 hits for the game.

York got three hits, an RBI and a run scored from Pitzer while Frankenfield chipped in with three hits and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher Colbe Herr was the other Spartan with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4.

The top two seeds in the tournament will now square off in an elimination game on Saturday morning at 10:00 am. The top-seeded Sea Gulls dropped a 9-7 decision to Frostburg State to fall into the elimination bracket. The winner of the 10:00 am contest will return to face Wesley in a 4:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon.
