DOVER, DEL – The York College baseball squad opened up their weekend stay with a 7-3 win over Wesley College in the opening game of the three-game Capital Athletic Conference series in Dover, Delaware on Friday. The Spartans snap a three game skid as they improve to 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the CAC. The Wolverines fall to 13-6 overall and 3-4 in the league.
The Spartans started the scoring early on a one-out solo home run to right by junior Jimmy King as the Spartans took the 1-0 lead. King's homer snapped an 11-game homerless streak for the Spartans. York's last game with at least one home run came on February 28 at Southern Virginia when Steve Tretter and Cohen went deep in the 18-8 win.
The Wolverines took a short-lived 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Wesley reached Spartan starter Tommy Moran for a pair of runs in the frame. Both runs came as result of two Spartan errors as York trailed by one through three frames of play.
The Green and White got a run back in the top of the fourth as Cohen hammered a solo homer to right on a 1-1 pitch, tying the game at two.
The Spartans picked up another run in the fifth as King had an RBI double to left center, scoring shortstop Colin Porter with York's third run of the game.
Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth with York's tally coming on a Frankenfield bomb to right. Moran did a nice job of managing a potentially huge inning for the Wolverines in the sixth. After giving up an RBI single, Moran was able to coax a double play ground ball that short-circuited the Wolverine frame.
York picked up three big insurance runs in the eighth as Cohen slammed a three-run shot to center, extended the Spartan lead to 7-3, which would prove to be the final margin of the Spartan victory.
Moran improves to 3-1 with the win as he allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks in his 7.2 innings of work. Moran has allowed just one earned run in his last 15.2 innings of action. Josh Kohn got the final out of the eighth for York while senior Brandon Ullom had an unusual ninth inning as he registered four strikeouts in the frame.
Wesley ace DJ Keckler suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk in his eight innings of work. He falls to 4-2 with the loss.
Cohen finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored courtesy of his second and third home runs of the year. Frankenfield went 3-for-4 with two doubles and his first Spartan home run. He drove in one and scored twice. King finished the contest 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. King's home run was his first collegiate round tripper. Senior Dustin Worthman paced the Spartans as the top of the order as he was 2-for-4.
Bryan Reshetar paced the Wolverines as he was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Morgan Rupp and Steve Perone each contributed two hits to the 10-hit Wesley attack.
Friday's power surge doubled the Spartans' home run total for the year. York had hit three home runs coming into the game.
The series continues on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning games. Game one of the double header has been moved up to 11:00 am with afternoon rain expected in Dover.
