Mustangs Earn Series Win with 7-2 Victory on Sunday

YORK, PA – The Stevenson University Mustang baseball team took the weekend series over the York College Spartans after winning a 7-2 contest on Sunday afternoon at Jaquet Field in York, PA. The Spartans fall to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the CAC while the Mustangs improve to 13-8-1 overall and 5-4 in the league.

The top of the third saw the first run scored in the game after Stevenson's Brad Blum scored from second on a Spartan throwing error. The Mustangs added another run after Josh Morris was able to take home on a second Spartan error in the inning as the Mustangs took the 2-0 lead.

Stevenson continued to build their advantage in the top of the fourth after Jordan Wright doubled and was brought home by Tom Goulian's sacrifice fly. The Mustangs held a 3-0 lead until the top of the sixth until another Spartan error, this one of the two-base variety, advanced Brad Blum from first to third base. The error would prove costly as Blum would cross the plate after a wild pitch.

Stevenson pitcher Ryan Kellough only allowed three hits through five innings, and the Spartans' offense was further hindered by key base running miscues. In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans were in good position to rally after a leadoff single by outfielder Jimmy King and a Steve Tretter double to center field which allowed King to score York's first run. The Spartans could not capitalize on their opportunity to score after Tretter was called out at third after trying to advance on a shallow single to center by Drew Frankenfield. The Spartans were held to one run in the inning and found themselves in a 4-1 hole at the end of the sixth.

King was able to score York's second run of the game in the bottom of the eighth after a sacrifice fly by Tretter. The Spartans closed the lead to a 4-2 Stevenson advantage, but they would not score again.

The Spartans sent out Josh Kohn to handle the top of the ninth inning with hopes of containing the Mustangs' lead. After a Brad Blum single and subsequent stolen base, a beautifully placed bunt single which found nothing but grass between the mound and third base, advanced Blum to third. He would later score on a Morris double. The Mustangs would add two more runs by the end of the inning.

Stevenson's Kellough recorded his first win of the season as he hurled seven-innings, allowing seven hits but only allowing one run. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. Pat Quinn tossed the final two innings for the save as he allowed a run on four hits. The save is his second of the year.

York's Joey Couch marked his fourth loss of the season despite a very solid performance on the mound. Couch pitched eight innings allowing seven hits and four runs of which only two were earned. He struck out two and walked three in the loss.

King led the Spartans with three hits and two runs scored. Tretter finished with two hits and an RBI. York finished with 11 hits while stranding nine runners.

Morris led the Mustangs with two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI on the day. Blum contributed with two hits on two plate appearances and scored three runs with two walks on the day. Stevenson recorded 11 hits and left 10 men on-base. Justin Anderson finished the game with three hits for the Mustangs.

The Spartans head to Rowan University on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
