ST. MARY'S CITY , MD – The St. Mary's College baseball team downed the York College Spartans 4-3 in the final game of their three-game regular season series on Sunday in St. Mary's City, MD.
The Seahawks improve to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the CAC while the Spartans are now 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Both teams scored single runs in the second to start the scoring. York's tally came on an Andrew Hershey sacrifice fly, plating Drew Frankenfield with York's first run. St. Mary's got their run on a Spartan error, tying the game at one. The St. Mary's inning could have been bigger but Spartan starter Joey Couch coaxed an inning-ending double play grounder that got him out of a jam.
The Spartans had something cooking in the fourth but St. Mary's starter Devon Jerrard got out of the inning, leaving Spartan runners at second and third and the game tied at one.
St. Marys reached Couch for a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Keith Johnson started the inning with an infield single. Alex Lenovitz followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Zach Nadolny then homered to left, scoring Johnson and Lenovitz, as the Seahawks took the 4-1 lead. Couch allowed a single and made an error on the following batter as St. Mary's looked poised to blow the game wide open. Couch settled down and got a field's choice, a strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the frame without any further damage.
York got one run back in the fifth as Drew Frankenfield singled to center, scoring Steve Tretter who had doubled earlier in the frame.
The Spartans picked up their third and final run in the sixth on a Seahawk error. York got singles in both the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to plate the tying run over the final three frames.
Jerrard picked up the win as he worked six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He improves to 2-2 with the win. Sam Coe earned the save as he threw three shutout innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts.
Couch took the loss as he allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 6.1 innings of work. He falls to 0-3 with the loss. Josh Kohn tossed the final 1.2 innings for York, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.
Nadolny led the Seahawks as he was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Corey Napier, Johnson, and Nick Urso each contributed two hits to the 10-hit St. Mary's attack.
Frankenfield and Hershey each banged out three hits for the Spartan offense. Tretter added two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
The Spartans left 12 runners stranded in the game while York turned three double plays in the loss.
York returns to action on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Elizabethtown to face the Blue Jays in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 3:30 pm in Elizabethtown.
