WASHINGTON, DC – The York College baseball squad dropped an 8-3 non-conference decision at Catholic University on Thursday afternoon in Washington, DC. The Spartans fall to 3-3 with the loss while the Cardinals, winners of two straight, improve to 4-2 overall.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the top of the first as Dustin Worthman led off the game with a single. He stole second and after a ground out and an error, scored on a Drew Frankenfield RBI single to right.
The Cardinals wasted little time in striking back in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals drew back-to-back walks to open the frame. Catholic got their first run on a Mark Kalokitis RBI single to center. Marc Hanna followed with a single to center, giving Catholic the 2-1 lead. Spartan starter Joey Couch minimized the damage as he got a double-play ground ball to end the Catholic inning.
The Spartans tied the game in the top of the second as Andrew Hershey singled with two outs. He stole second, moved to third on a bunt single from Worthman and scored on a Catholic error on Worthman's bunt.
York took a short lived lead in the top of the fifth. Justin Cohen singled to right center with one out. He moved to second on a ground out then to third on a balk. Cohen came in to score on a Colin Kelly wild pitch, giving York the 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals reached Couch for three runs on three hits, an error and a hit batter as they took a 5-3 lead through five innings of play.
Catholic added three insurance runs in the seventh courtesy of three hits, another Spartan error, two walks and a hit batter as the Cardinals pushed their advantage to 8-3.
The Spartan offense went quiet in the final three innings, managing just two hits with both coming from Worthman as the senior second baseman continues to sizzle at the plate.
Worthman banged out four hits to lead the Spartan offense. York had just four other hits in the game. Senior Steve Tretter had York's lone extra base hit with a lead off double in the third.
Kalokitis led the Cardinals as he was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Hanna also had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Dan Hinchclif added a hit, two RBI, and run scored.
Kelly earned the win in relief as he allowed a run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Andrew Carroll started for the Cardinals and went four innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Couch suffered the loss as he falls to 0-2. Couch allowed five runs on eight hits with three walks, three strikeouts and a hit batter in 4.2 innings of work. Josh Kohn relieved Couch and allowed three unearned runs on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts in his 1.2 innings of action. Senior KC Beshore returned to the mound for the first time in two seasons when he threw the final 1.2 innings for York. Beshore allowed one hit with two strikeouts in his outing.
The Spartans are set to return to action on Wednesday, March 7 when they make their 2012 home debut with a non-conference contest against Johns Hopkins. Game time at Jaquet Field is set for 3:00 pm.
