Bats Explode in 18-8 Win at Southern Virginia
BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College baseball team closed out their southern trip with an 18-8 non-conference win over Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.
The Spartans improve to 3-2 overall while the Knights fall to 2-5.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings of play. That changed quickly in the top of the third as lead off man Dustin Worthman singled to left and advanced to second on a failed pick off attempts. Worthman moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Justin Cohen RBI double. Drew Frankenfield then singled, moving Cohen to third while Frankenfield hustled to second on the throw as the Spartans had a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Colbe Herr scored Cohen with an RBI ground out as the Spartan lead grew to 2-0. Sophomore Colin Porter scored Frankenfield with an RBI double to right center and he came home on a Jimmy King single to right. After King advanced to second on a passed ball, Nic Long drove him home with a single through the left side, giving York a 5-0 lead.
The Knights got on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run off the bat of Andrew Snider.
York got a pair of runs in the top of the fourth courtesy of a two-run round tripper of the bat of Cohen as the Spartan lead grew to 7-1.
Southern Virginia got to Spartan starter Zach Philippi for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, drawing the Knights to within three runs at 7-4.
After a quiet fifth inning, York got three runs in the top of the sixth with two coming off the stick of Steve Tretter as the senior centerfielder hit a two-run homer. The other Spartan run when Frankenfield scored on a Porter single.
The Knights got four runs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting York's lead to 10-8.
York responded in the top of the eighth by blowing the game wide open. The Spartans plated seven runs on three hits with an error and three walks. Cohen had a two-run double, King had a two-run single, and Sean McCann also had a pair of RBI in the frame.
York closed out the scoring in the ninth on a Long RBI single.
Philippi earned the win for the Spartans as he went four innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout. He improves to 1-0 as he picked up his first collegiate win. Freshman Andrew Tucci tossed two scoreless innings as he allowed just one hit. Fellow freshman Cameron Funk closed out the game with a scoreless inning in the ninth.
Justin King took the loss for the Knights as he allowed five runs on 10 hits in three innings. He falls to 0-2 with the loss.
Four Spartans had three hits in the win. Worthman was 3-for-5 with four runs scored at the top of the order for the Spartans. Cohen was 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored while Porter was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. King was the fourth Spartan with three knocks as he was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Long added two hits and two RBI while Tretter also had two hits with two RBI and two runs scored.
Dale Brown, Barrett Price, and Robbie Key led the Knights with three hits each. Brown added an RBI and a run scored while Price contributed two RBI and a run scored. Key chipped in with an RBI. Snider was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Catholic University to face the Cardinals in a non-conference contest. Game time from Washington, DC is set for 3:00 pm.
