Falcons Upend Spartans in Non-Conference Tilt
GRANTHAM, PA – The York College baseball squad dropped a 5-2 decision at Messiah College on Monday afternoon in Grantham, PA. The Spartans fall to 11-26 overall while the Falcons improve to 22-17.
Messiah opened the scoring with a two-run second inning and then pushed the lead to 5-0 with a three-run third frame. All three runs in the third came off the bat of Ryan Brown as the catcher hit a three-run round tripper for the Falcons.
The Spartans got on the board in the seventh. Freshman Colbe Herr had an RBI double and then came around to score on a Nic Long RBI double of his own. The Spartans had an opportunity for a bigger inning as they left the bases loaded in the frame.
The Green and White got singles in the eighth and ninth innings but would be unable to mount a big rally to draw even with Messiah.
The Falcons went pitcher by committee, as senior Eric Spring was the first pitcher to the hill for Messiah. Spring earned the win as he allowed one hit in three shutout innings with three strikeouts. He improves to 2-2 with the victory. Five Falcon pitchers followed Spring to the hill and four of the five had shutout appearances. Drew Frankenfield tossed the ninth to earn the save, his second of the season.
Freshman David Walker suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings of work. Walker, who falls to 2-2 with the setback, struck out five and walked just one during his stint. Junior Brandon Ullom threw well in relief, allowing just one hit in his two innings of action.
Brown finished the game 1-for-3 with his home run and three RBI. John Brubaker added two hits and a run scored while Jon Lapp also had a pair of hits for the Falcons.
Long and senior Kyle Cook led the Spartan offense as they each went 2-for-4 while Long also added an RBI. Herr finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans conclude their 2011 season with a weekend set at Ferrum College on Saturday and Sunday. The Spartans and Panthers square off in game one on Saturday at 7:00 pm followed by a 1:00 pm game on Sunday to close out the campaign.
