YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team closed out their 2011 home slate in the win column Tuesday afternoon posting a 9-6 triumph over visiting Montclair St. With the triumph, the Spartans improve to 11-23 on the season while the Red Hawks drop to 15-12.
Steve Tretter led the Spartan offensive effort as he went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot, recording three runs batted in and two runs scored. One of Tretter's three hits Tuesday proved of the big fly variety as he cranked his team-leading fourth home run in the second inning.
York opened a big lead early in the contest, plating five runs in that second frame. With runners on first and second with two outs, designated hitter Jimmy King registered an infield single while a throwing error on the play allowed Justin Cohen to come home for the Green and White's first run of the contest. Following that first run, Colin Porter and King came home on a Colbe Herr single into center. Tretter then gave York a 5-0 advantage as he launched his two-run round-tripper over the left field fence.
Adding two more in the bottom of the third, Porter ripped a two-run shot of his own over the right field fence to plate himself and CT Stanley. The rookie's second career home run provided the Spartans with a significant 7-0 advantage.
Montclair cut the lead to 7-1 on a Michael Boggi fourth inning home run before tallying three more in the top of the fifth. Mickey McGraw hit a three-run homer to plate all three runs in the inning as the Spartan lead went to 7-4.
In the sixth, Montclair cut deeper into that score as they tallied another run, this one courtesy of a Matthew Moreno double.
Owning what was now a not-as-comfortable 7-5 lead, the Spartans responded in the bottom half of the sixth with two runs. With King standing on first and one out, Tretter ripped a triple into center to record his third R.B.I. of the contest. Kyle Cook followed that with a run-scoring single to short as Tretter came home for what was the ninth and final Spartan run of the game.
Montclair added one more in the top of the seventh but that proved all the scoring in the contest.
Aside from Tretter's outstanding performance at the dish, Porter went 2-for-3 including his home run while King also posted a 2-for-3 day. Cook had two hits in his five at-bats as the Spartans totaled 12 hits on the afternoon.
Starter Andy Rosenzweig collects his fourth win of the season as he threw two scoreless innings. In the pitcher-by-committee outing, Josh Kohn, Joey Couch, Bryan Palumbo, and Brandon Ullom also saw time on the hill. Ullom picks up the two-inning save, his second of the year, as he struck out two and only allowed one hit over the final two frames.
The Spartans, who now hit the road for the remainder of the season, return to action on Saturday, April 30. York travels to Randolph-Macon for a doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets with game one first pitch slated for 1:00 pm.
