Spartans Post Comeback Win on Senior Day

YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team picked up a 7-5 Senior Day victory over visiting Franklin & Marshall on Monday afternoon. With the come-from-behind triumph, the Spartans improve to 10-23 on the year while the Diplomats fall to 20-16.

Tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Justin Cohen reached first on a hit-by-pitch. A pair of wild pitches later, Cohen wound up on third with no one out. After a pair of groundouts to second, senior Rob Klinck laced a clutch two-out single into right to plate Cohen for York's first lead of the game. The senior shortstop followed his base hit by stealing second and then reaching third on another wild pitch. Colbe Herr then proved clutch himself as he drove in Klinck with a base hit into center to give York some breathing room and the eventual 7-5 victory.

Those tallies would be the final ones in the contest as the Spartans closed out the contest to secure their tenth win of the season.

York's David Walker, who came on in relief to start the top of the fifth, proved masterful over his five innings on the hill. Walker quieted the Diplomat bats as he surrendered zero runs and only allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two to collect his second win of 2011.

The Diplomats jumped on the board first with a trio of runs in the top of the opening frame. With one out, J.T. Triantos and Will Benenson received back-to-back walks before Eric Bornstein reaches on a single to short to load the bases. Russell Tischler then knocked in Franklin & Marshall's first two runs with a single into center. With Bornstein standing on the third, Blue Wells recorded the R.B.I. on a groundout to short to put the Diplomats up 3-0.

York responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame as Steve Tretter led off the Spartans' half with a ripped double to right. Pushed to third by a Kyle Cook groundout to second, Tretter came home on a Devin Harbold groundout to second, plating the Green and White's first run of the afternoon.

F&M struck for two more in the top of the fourth inning, increasing their margin to 5-1. With runners on first and second and only one out, Will singled down the left field line as Andrew Conlan and Aaron Gillette both scored to give the visitors a four-run advantage. That inning could have been significantly worse for the Green and White had it not been for an outstanding play by Harbold in left. Wells led off the inning with a deep fly into left that appeared destined for extra bases. However, the senior left fielder raced back and made a terrific over-the-should snag for the first out of the frame.

Just as they had done in the bottom of the first, the Spartans responded with one of the their own in the latter half of the fourth. Klinck knocked a double down the left field line. With two outs, senior Steve Bonitatibus ripped a lined single into left allowing Klinck to score as York scratched across their second run of the game.

In the fifth, the Spartans notched two more tallied and brought their deficit to one at 5-4. Cook led off York's half with a single into center, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Harbold followed with a single into right, pushing Cook to third. The senior then came home on a double play, cutting the Diplomat lead to 5-3. With the bases clear, first baseman C.T. Stanley crushed a solo shot over the left field fence as the no-doubter brought York within one at 5-4.

The Spartans knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth as a leadoff walk to Herr resulted in the game-tying run. After the base-on-balls, Herr advanced to second via a wild pitch. Tretter slashed a single into left, which moved Herr to third, having to hold to make sure the line drive got down. Herr then scored the tying run as Cook grounded into a fielder's choice. Credit to Cook on the play as he beat out the throw to first on the attempted double play.

For the game, Tretter and Cook both posted 2-for-5 performances while Klinck went 2-for-4 from the dish, drove in one, and scored two. Bonitatibus went 1-for-4 with a run batted in.

Spartan starter Tommy Moran settled down after a tough first inning to give the Green and White a chance for the comeback. Excluding the first, Moran tossed three more innings only allowing one earned run during that time.

The Spartans close out their 2011 home slate on Tuesday, April 26, as they host Montclair State in a 4:00 pm tilt.
