YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team fell to Keystone 8-2 on Thursday afternoon in York. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 9-21 on the season while the Giants improve their 2011 record to 18-9.
The Spartans held the early lead as got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second, posting both runs with two outs. After the Giants retired York's first two hitters in the frame, Colin Porter knocked a single through the right side to begin the Spartan rally. York followed Porter's base hit with back-to-back doubles courtesy of Nic Long and Joe Doyle. Long's rip went into right center as he plated a hustling Porter. Doyle then brought home Long with his two-bagger to right, staking the Green and White to a 2-0 advantage.
The top of the third saw the visiting Keystone squad cut York's lead in half as they responded with a run in the next half inning. Esteban Meletiche opened up the Giants' third with a triple off the wall in center. Brian Del Rosso quickly brought in Keystone's first run as his slow-roller to second allowing Meletiche to race home.
The Giants struck again in the top of the sixth, posting two runs in the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Andy Vega knotted the score at 2-2 with his eighth home run of the 2011 campaign. Edwin Padua followed Vega's round-tripper with a single into right and was then pushed to second on a Frank Mormino sacrifice bunt. Meletiche gave Keystone the lead as he brought in Padua with a single into left, grabbing a 3-2 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Keystone added three more runs to their ledger to take a 6-2 lead. After loading the bases, Padua proved the beneficiary of a Spartan error in right as the bases cleared and Padua ended up on third.
The Giants put up one more in the top of the eighth, courtesy of a Roberto Santana double, to secure a 7-2 advantage. That lead went up to 8-2 in the ninth as Vega scored on a Spartan throwing error to provide the final result.
For the game, Meletiche went 2-for-5 with two runs scores and a run batted in while Vega posted a 1-for-3 day while scoring three runs for the Giants. On the mound, Jeff Frost picks up the wins as he improves to 5-3 on the season. The Keystone hurler tossed six innings, struck out four, and only walked one.
For the Green and White, Russ Patti put together a 2-for-2 day from the dish while Doyle posted a 1-for-2 performance at the plate, notching one R.B.I. Long was also 1-for-2 with a run driven in.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 23, when they travel to Christopher Newport for a 12:00 pm contest with the Captains.
