Wesley Knocks Spartans from CAC Tournament

DOVER, DEL - The York College baseball squad fell to the Wesley College Wolverines 5-3 in the second round of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament on Friday afternoon in Dover, Delaware.

The Wolverines survive to advance to the weekend portion of the double elimination tournament as they are now 17-17 overall. The Spartans fall to 9-20 overall as their stay in the tournament is over.

The game was scoreless through the first four and a half innings of play before the Wolverines notched a run on a Corey Jefferson RBI ground out in the bottom of the fifth.

The Wolverines pushed the lead to 4-0 with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a three-run shot by Steve Perone.

The Spartans answered the Wolverines with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh. Junior Steve Tretter started the uprising with a one out double to right center. Tretter came around to score when sophomore Justin Cohen ripped a two-run homer to right. Senior Rob Klinck then singled and eventually scored on a Colin Porter two-out RBI single as the Spartans trimmed their deficit to one.

The Wolverines got a key insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a Rob Benedict infield single with one out.

The Spartans had something cooking in the eighth as they had runners at second and third with one out but Wolverine reliever Adam Stuart got out of the inning as the Green and White wasted a great scoring opportunity.

Stuart got the Spartans in order in the ninth as York was eliminated from the tournament.

Jordan Lozzi earned the win as he allowed three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work. He improves to 6-2 with the win. Stuart picked up his fourth save of the year as he pitched a perfect two innings of relief for Wesley.

Senior Andy Rosenzweig suffered the loss as he allowed five runs, with just two being earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. He falls to 3-5 with the loss.  Junior Brandon Ullom tossed the final 1.2 innings and racked up four strikeouts for York.

Perone led the Wolverines with two hits, three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Ryan Polk and Jon Carlson each contributed two hits to the Wolverine offense.

Porter paced the Spartan offense, as he was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Cohen hit his second home run of the year for two RBI and a run scored. Klinck finished the game 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Spartans are now off until Wednesday when they host Keystone in a non-conference contest. Game time at Jaquet Field is set for 3:30 pm.
